What kind of jazz is it I like?
« on: 1 Feb 2008, 03:14 pm »
Hi all,

So I really like some jazz but others just do not do it for me AT ALL.  What I dig is stuff like the Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane.  I also like Jaco sometimes.  I find when I like him its awesome but much of his stuff is way to soft and poofy for me.  I like a hard driving bassline.  I really don't care for Pat Methany but I do like John Scofield.  So jazz gurus what should I buy today at the store?  I much prefer dirty to clean anyday of the week.

I am guessing you would like most of the jazz music from the 50's and 60's. Just about anything recorded on BLUE NOTE during those decades will do it for ya. Much of it has been remastered in the last 5 years. You'll know the remasters because they say RVG (Rudy Van Gelder) on the covers.

From this period, check out likes of Art Blakey, Cannonball Adderley, Jimmy Smith, Ike Quebec, Andrew Hill, Elmo Hope, Eric Dolphy, Freddie Hubbard, Horace Silver, etc., etc., etc., ad infinitum.

Enjoy.... :thumb:

Try Weather Report "Mysterious Traveller" and "Black Market". Also try Brian Brombergs "Jaco" album.
Secondly try Marc Johnsons Bass Desires, the first album (S/T) and the second titled "Second Sight".
Billy Cobham "Spectrum"
John Abercrombie "Timeless"
Jack DeJohnette New Directions "Live in Europe"
Tony Williams "Believe it"

There's a few

Definitely Weather Report, Jack DeJohnette. Marcus Miller for all kinds of bass lines, he can work it hard, musical and hard driving, often goes for big tone thing. Can listen to samples at Amazon.

STS9FAN,

Based on your liking of Monk & Scofield - two of my favorites, too - I'd recommend
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
Omer Avital - The Ancient Art of Giving
Dave Holland Quintet - anything from about 1995 on.
Chico Freeman - Tradition in Transition (good luck finding it)

Follow Brad's advice.

Since you like the Horace Silver groove you need to look for Hard Bop Jazz. The time period would be the late 50's through the 60's.  Hank Mobley (Roll Call, Soul Station, No Room for Squares), Lee Morgan (IMHO The Rajah is amazing  :thumb:  and The Sidewinder is a classic), Blue Mitchell, Freddie Hubbard (Open Seasame) , Tina Brooks and anything by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. You find that most of these guys were with the Jazz Messengers at one time or another and more often than not played on each others albums (especially Morgan and Mobley).

Enjoy your journey.

Miles Davis-Bitches Brew
Miles Davis-On The Corner
Sonny Rollins-Way Out West

I think if you are looking for terms, the period style you are into is "Cool" Jazz through to early "Fusion".

Oh and if you like Thelonius Monk, check out "Monks Time" which I think is his best.

That Monk with Coltrane album is some fine work.  That's early Coltrane under Monk's mentorship.  There is a lot to like.  At least give Art Blakey one shot:  Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers at Keystone Korner 3 (Concord SACD).  That's got Wynton and Branford Marsalis on it when they were young turks and a swinging pianist named Donald Brown.  This is fresh, straight ahead uptempo jazz, live in the club, cookin with gas!  And if you can take this much heat, I got the big daddy for ya!
