Audiophile quality CD mixes - how to?
« on: 26 Jan 2008, 04:52 am »
Hi everyone,

I was wondering if someone can give me advice on how to burn CDs in a way that 100% preserves the quality of the source CD? I know that there are now audiophile music server based systems available (Transporter, etc.) but I can think of better ways to spend $2k+ right now (for a source that would sound as good as my modded SACD that is). I would assume you could possibly do this by ripping CDs via some lossless format, but how good is the PC at burning the information back to a blank CD? I'm running a PC with Windows XP.

Thanks

If you want to do compilation CDs with your own music mix, that isn't hard. First, as suggested above, use Exact Audio Copy to rip the original CD material to your hard drive in either WAV or FLAC (lossless) format.

Then, burn your selected songs to a quality CDR. I use Taiyo Yuden blanks which is an excellent, consistent brand that makes their own CDRs. (Some of the popular name brands are made by the "factory of the month club" so you are not getting consistent quality.) Mitsui is another good brand.

Also, it is typically best to not burn a CDR at the fastest speed. I typically use 16X. Interestingly, the slowest speed your drive can write at is not necessarily the highest quality. You may want to invest a bit of effort and "waste" a few CDRs. Burn the same thing at several speeds and then re-extract them using EAC. Settle on the write speed that gives you the fastest EAC extraction with the fewest errors.

There are some golden ears who will have more complex rituals and rules than noted above (using black or gold CDRs, etc.) but the above more than sufficient for my needs.

I have had excellent results with Sony CD-Rs over many years. They are easy to get at Target, etc.

I use NERO 7.5.13,it copies at 20x and Memorex Black CD-Rs. The result is a copy that sounds better than the original. Memorex Black has outperformed Mitsui in testing and is readily available at BestBuy.

if you are extracting without errors and then burning a disc there is literally no way for the copy to sound better than the original. If everything goes perfectly it will sound exactly the same as the original. If there are errors it may sound worse than the original but there is no way for it to sound better. Bits are bits...
