I read recently (in the last week) about a couple of entrepreneurs intending to start soon to release 1/2 track 15 ips reel to reel copies of master tapes for audiophiles, but I cannot find the source.

Can anyone steer me to a link?

I understand that PCM digital gets to be equivalent, roughly, to the best analog tape at about 24bits and 192kHz sampling, though I've never had the pleasure of comparing.

It's a project that Doc Bottlehead and (I believe) Paul Stubblebine of Paul Stubblebine Mastering in San Francisco are involved in.
At the last few VSAC events several people (including the above) have brought master tapes that really sounded better than anything else there.

My understanding is that in the highly secretive JVC R&D Lab, they feel that 24bits and 192(x2)kHz is necessary to come very, very close. There are only a handful of people allowed in the Lab, 2 JVC Executives and about 10 Scientists, plus one individual who has enjoyed a close personal relationship with the JVC people for many decades. He mentioned it to me.
