Coverting FLAC to MP3 in bulk
« on: 20 Jan 2008, 05:33 pm »
Ok, I went back to Apple and just got a 160GB Classic iPod.

Now I need to load it up with music, but all of my music is in FLAC.

Is there a nice and easy way to do a bulk convert from FLAC to MP3?

I have found some processes using Winamp to convert FLAC to WAVE and to use iTunes to convert from WAVE to MP3, but it is way too manual of a process.

All of my FLAC music is stored in the following way (if it matters):

Artist Name - Album

Thanks,

George

George,

Two highly regarded apps are Tag&Rename which is free, and the other is MP3Tag which cost a few bucks, but does offer a trial.

Tag&rename... http://www.softpointer.com/tr.htm

MP3Tag.......... http://www.mp3tag.de/en/

FYI....You may already know of this, but... with either program, be sure the option that automatically deletes the original souce file (FLAC) is not checked upon converting over to MP3!  I know of a couple horror stories where peoples lossless files were gone forever, only to replaced with mp3.

I assume you still have use your old pc to run the conversion. I've used this to convert my entire collection from wav to flac at one point.   This is a Swiss army knife converter so it has many options.  You can also maintain the same directory structure as the source.  Just the extension changed after conversion. to another drive/directory.

This is something called MediaCoder.  It is a project you can find on sourceforge.net
http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/

The file types supported are listed as supported:
MP3, Vorbis, AAC, AAC+, AAC+v2, MusePack, Speex, AMR, WMA, RealAudio, mp3PRO*
FLAC, WavPack, Monkey's Audio, OptimFrog, AAC Lossless, TTA, WAV/PCM, Waveform
H.264, XviD, DivX, MPEG 1/2/4, Theora, Flash Video, Dirac, 3ivx*, RealVideo*, Windows Media Video
AVI, MPEG/VOB, Matroska, MP4, PMP, RealMedia*, ASF, Quicktime*, OGM*

I knew that my Foobar has this, but this older thread goes into some detail and gives a step-by-step cookbook recipe.  FYI.

George,

try this link http://www.sbooth.org/Max/  if you have a Mac.  Program is free and works well.  If you are using Leopard download the beta version.

Yup, if George does have a Mac, Max IMHO, is the best.

Although, I'm thinking George is using Windows because he mentioned Winamp.

I am indeed Windows based.

I am trying out Mediacoder right now and it appears to do all I want - it's just a little slow...

I used dbpoweramp converter to do all of mine.  Works great in batch.

I used Media Monkey when I did it: http://www.mediamonkey.com/. You can set it up to convert with a standard path pulling from the embedded tags and it will do a batch convert on your entire collection. Worked pretty well for me.

I use dbpoweramp for ripping now and it does it work good on batch stuff as well.

That being said there is only one program I use for batch conversions

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=61511

Take the 2 seconds to learn it and then use walk away. When you come back it will be done.

I always have been using this to reflac around 5000 CD from flac 1.1.2-1.2.0 level 5 to 1.2.1 level 8

It took about about 48 hours to do them all but there wasnt a single glitch and it even pointed out a few songs that had compression errors.

Edit: Another hidden gem is the new rewrite of CAD. Works better and can't be beat for those obscure covers.
