Super PAS 3 preamps
« on: 18 Jan 2008, 03:57 pm »
Hi:

I have it under pretty good authority that Frank has three Super PAS 3 tube preamps available (I just finished them).  One of them has the original Dynaco gold faceplate and knobs.  Note that the tone controls and a couple of switches are removed from the circuit, but are left in the chassis for looks.  This preamp has new AVA boards for the phono, line and power supply.  I also installed the AVA gold jack set.  If you like the original Dyna look, but want a modern circuit set, this is a great unit.

The second is a Dyna PAS chassis with a black AVA faceplate.  With the AVA faceplate, we eliminated the tone control knobs and a couple of switches.  Like the first one, this has all new boards and jack set.  This is a very sharp looking unit.

The last is a one-off preamp that has an experimental power supply where I replaced the stock Dyna power transformer with one of our T8 toroid transformers.  The new power supply has a DC regulated supply for the tube heaters, and a solid state high voltage power supply (verses the tube rectifier used in the Super PAS 3 units).  The new transformer has a lot more current capability, and therefore is a lot stiffer.  The end result is a more open and dynamic sound.  This preamp has a silver AVA faceplate similar to our black faceplate, but it has Super PAS 2 labeling.

All of the preamps have new 12AX7 tubes (two line and two phono), and come with a warranty.  As for pricing?  I have no idea – give Frank a call at 651-330-9871.

Thanks,

Larry

Larry,

Since the Super PAS 3 was a project for end users as well as a factory rebuild, would the new PS circuit be available for retrofit into our current Super PAS 3 units??

Hi Ron,

The one-off preamp is a prototype that I worked on a while back.  While the sound improvement was very nice, we never introduced the power supply upgrade because of the cost, and because the PAS series of preamps are pretty old.

Thanks,

Larry

I'd love to rework the PS on my Super PAS 3. Toroid Corp of MD has a couple of high current toroid transformers for tube amps. Check them out at:

http://www.toroid.com/standard_transformers/rectifier_transformers/rectifier_transformers_tube.htm

I have the big one and am going to use for a new custom U70. They seem to target the ST-70 and PAS units from Dynaco, although the current capability is much greater. I'm guessing that the SS regulation is along the same type of theory described by Frank on the PS rework of the original Dyna ST-120 in AB issue Volume IV Number 8 of AB.

Ron.

I am building several AVA projects as we speak, and the Super Pas 3 is one of them.

I wonder if Larry could post more info on the bigger Pas 3 power supply here, like parts required, with part numbers and so on, any modification on the original power supply board? I ask just out of curiosity, and probably won't put it in my Dyna chassis, after all, I'd like to preserve some Dyna root in my Super Pas 3.

I just got my Omega Star line board done today, and am admiring my work.

Frank, please offer more kits, I'd build them.

The one off prototype with our own toroid transformer does not use our "normal" Super Pas power supply board, inasmuch as that board was designed to work with the original Dyna 12X4 rectifier tube.

The prototype has a very tidy breadboarded power supply board containing the main high voltage diode bridge, the low voltage diode bridge, the heater 12V regulator IC, and the necessary RC networks and support structure.  There is no parts list, etc. available, because we have no intention of reproducing it, simply because it would be too expensive for the scope of the original Dyna chassis.  By the time you paid for it all, you would paid nearly as much as for a brand new Transcendence Eight preamp, which is still distinctly better.

However this is one sweet sounding little tube preamp, kind of a Super Pas Three on steroids, with excellent dynamics and transparency.

The price for this one off is $795 including a one year parts and labor warranty.  Remember that it has an AVA silver faceplate and knob set, precision volume and balance controls, the AVA gold plated jack set kit, and all AVA Super Pas line and phono boards (and new JJ tubes too).

The price for the AVA black face Super Pas three unit is $895, the original Dyna gold face unit is $795.00.

Regards,

Frank Van Alstine

The Super Pas Three with the original Dyna faceplate is sold.

Don't hesitate about the other two.  :)
