Getting dropouts with Itunes
« on: 16 Jan 2008, 01:05 am »
For this setup...connected via Benchmark DAC1 USB and just started using itunes.  I'm getting audio dropouts.  Never had dropouts using Foobar or WMP.  Am I missing something?
Think I might be screwed, used Itunes to convert the music over to its library and now I can't play any music in foobar or wmp.  I THINK I WANT OUT.  I knew I should've have gone to the other side, resisted all these years, got curious and now they got me by the balls  :duh: I feel like they're got my music hostage

I've had dropout problems but only from playback over a network when then there are too may wireless links.  This may not apply to you since you didn't mention that your music wasn't local to your machine (which I assume is a PC).

You might try to make sure nothing else is running on your machine to see if it will work at all.  I know that's not realistic in real life but just to get started.  If you can't get playback going you might want to try reinstalling iTunes.  Depending on the size of your music library, you could even go so far as uninstalling it but that may be too painful because you'll need to re-import your library.

I haven't moved back and forth recently enough to remember and I don't know the format your music is in but moving back can be done without too much brain damage.  You may want to just try a few files to make sure it works the way you expect.  Then keep a copy of the iTunes stuff so you don't have to do it again if things change.

Just some thoughts that I hope might be helpful.

Cheers and good luck.

When the dropout occurs, the sounds stops (track keeps playing) and the sound won't appear again until the next track starts or if I pause and then press play again.

I can only assume some other software and itunes are bumping heads but I haven't the time nor desire to hunt the problem down, I just want out.  If I uninstall Itunes with my music files (mostly wave, some wma) stay intact?

Thanks

Gotcha.

The music files should be OK when you uninstall BUT...

Just to be safe, I'd move/copy the music files to another directory to avoid something stupid happening.

If you get up the nerve, try the J.River media player. It runs circles around WMP.! It has mondo plug ins and configurations. It reminds me of Itunes.. just works better with PC and has more features.

I thought about J River once or twice, may have to try it now.
I'm sold on PC audio but finding a software program that works or me has been a P.I.T.A.

I'm trying to uninstall Itunes now, wouldn't be surprised if all my music is M.I.A.

Guess I need to hit the foobar or itunes forums, good gawd.
Does anyone know how to un-itune (convert back the music files?)

I don't know what file format your music is in but it looks like foobar can't find the files it needs to play back.  Did you convert the files music files that you tried to play?  There may info out there on conversions from iTunes that may do the trick if the procedure isn't clear.

I'm hoping that a copy of your library is stored somewhere safe.

Good luck.

This may work to fix your problem within iTunes:

Check youe settings within Quicktime. Quicktime settings do have an effect on iTunes. Check the settings for audio. Mine defaulted to 384k oversampling. Reduce it to 44.1K.  I have no dropouts and the sound improved as well.

Thanks guys, I'll look into those options

I rip via EAC using the cue sheet  option:evil: onto an external hard drive.
I can see the files on the hard drive, even has the cue sheet logo etc... bit foobar can't recognize it for some reason.  I can play non cue sheet wav files in WMP.  I already uninstalled Itunes though.

Do you have the latest Foobar 9.5?

I have 9.4.1
Are there worthwile inprovements in 9.5?
Foobar never gave me any issues per se before the itunes conversion process.

I did check Quicktime it's running at 44.1K

Yes it is worth the upgrade. I had problems at times getting Foobar to recognize some of my music after installing Itunes. After I upgraded it seemed to recognize just fine.

In order to get that Itunes off I had to do a complete re install. I will never put Itunes back on my PC!

You should really try the J.River software. It works like a charm. It recognized both ASIOs that I have installed on my PC and allowed me to choose without issue.

Wavelength even has a little setup guide on the site http://usbdacs.com/Windows.html

That just scared the crap out of me.
You know you should've sent a PM my on something like that...you've got the green light in the future on anything that you think might be of interest to me...anything.  had you mentioned that then I surely would've never touched itunes with a ten foot pole.

Did you 'rescan' your library in Foobar after you iTuned?

Yes, but no cure
I think I will update to foobar 5.0 to see if that helps
