Bryston Demo CES Vegas 2008

Hi All,

Please see below a report from David Necro of Crypt Magazine in the USA regarding our display and sound at the recent Vegas 2008 CES.

After the "same 'ol same 'ol" at the AVN, I decided to check out the other convention here in frightfully fabulous Las Vegas; the 2008 CES (Consumer Electronics Show)

As an audiophile I wanted to see and hear the latest high-end systems from the world's greatest manufacturers. So I did just that. This was an exciting prospect. Because I was able to compare and contrast these systems with that here in the Crypt Magazine listening room.

I first went to the room shared by the legendary Peterborough, Ontario, Canada manufacturer Bryston Ltd, and Kentucky USA's Thiel Audio. Bryston has been around for 4 decades, and are featured widely in the recording industry, so they know their stuff. As does the 30 year old Thiel Audio. It was only natural that Bryston amps and preamps are used exclusively here in the Crypt Magazine listening room and I was chomping at the bit to see and hear their assault on the state of the art in audio.

On display was the full array of Bryston products (amps, preamps, and CD Player) including their latest product, the BDA-1. According to Bryston's literature, the BDA-1 is "a state-of-the art external stereo D/A converter using fully discrete analog class-a proprietary Bryston analog circuits, 2 independent analog and digital linear power supplies and dual Crystal CS-4398 DAC's".  It also looks impressive with the silver faceplate (which matches other Bryston components) and the engraved Bryston logo.
So after drooling over the fabulous display, I made my way into the Bryston/Thiel listening room.

I was confronted with incredible sound that drew me in mentally and especially emotionally. I could have listened to this system for hours. It was a very dynamic and transparent sound that covered the entire frequency range.

The system comprised of the 28B-SST mono amps, BP-26 preamp, BCD-1 CD Player, Thiel 3.7 speakers and Torus power isolation units. A dream system for sure. However, this system costs considerably less than most state-of-the-art systems. You don't necessarily have to be a multi-millionaire to buy this. State of the art for us regular people.

I was impressed at the time that James gave to me especially after coming off a meeting and a consultation with one of his dealers.

Thanks James!

 Hi All,

Please see below some more feedback from one of our California dealers on our Demo at this year’s CES Show. System was Bryston BP26/MPS-2, 28B SST's, BCD-1 CD Player, Thiel CS 3.7’s, Torus Power Isolation units.

“Hi JT,

After listening to numerous high dollar systems at the Vegas CES Show this year, I am compelled to let you know how your room “stacked up” to these other systems.

Overall, your Bryston/Thiel system punched my buttons in terms of very high musical purity, wide dynamic range, harmonic richness & dimension-ality.  There was not a hint of strain, dynamic compression, nor solid state/CD artifacts that can tend to produce an analytical edge to the music.  Please note, I am comparing your system with other systems that sell for 2 to 5 times more.

In summary, I must say that your system was in the top group of systems that would make hard core analog/tube inmates shake their heads in disbelief. A winning combination, indeed.  Keep up the great work!

Regards,
Dan”

Does not surprise me in the slightest.  My 3.7s are just about broken in and with the SP1.7, 14BSST and BCD-1 I've gotten a few comments like "you mean we're just listening to ordinary CDs."  I played some of the last Joni Mitchell CD, "Shine," for someone tonight and it is quite a good demo CD.

CES-2008:

Hi All,

For all you Magnepan fans out there Magnepan demonstrated a motorized ‘3-channel STEREO’ system at this years CES show in Vegas which Bryston was involved in. The system consisted of FOUR (2 centers) ‘on wall’ Magnepan planar loudspeakers, two Bryston BP-26/MPS-2 preamps, three Bryston 7B SST power amps and the Bryston BCD-1 CD Player.

We are starting to get some comments on that system as well- see below:

“Most of the rooms we visited found sounded good to great but always reminded me of a hifi system. Only a couple really transported us to another level of listening.

Magnepan put on a pretty impressive demo of their motorized wall mount speakers. We thought the classical selection was incredible. Vocals were slightly larger than life but it was still tonally great.”

Thanks for posting my review, James. I had a great time hanging out in your room. Thanks for letting me stick around.
