Look over here:  http://www.head-fi.org/

Many of those guys were way into the Chinese import thing.

We played with a few DAC's this past weekend, including a few of the Asian ones touted at Head-Fi. A brief description of what we found out is in this thread:

A separate transport-DAC may be the way to go. IF you don't like the sound you can always try a different DAC, or even mod it fairly easily. Many of these have plug & play op-amps which have a dramatic influence on the overall sound.

Enjoy,
Bob

I would second the Raysonic call.

You might have a look at the Cary line of cd players, particularly the former Stereophile Class A -rated CD 303-200. This player is solid state (no tubes) but has a warm sound with great bass power, and balanced outputs. It also has digital volume, digital out AND digital input, so you can plug other digital sources, such as a Squeezebox into it, which is how I use mine.

Mine might be for sale in the near future as I am downsizing my system, but even if you don't go for my unit, the Cary is worth checking out.  The used price is definitely in your price range.

You can read opinions of the Cary 303-200 in comparison to a couple of other digital front ends at a recent audio get together here:

Oooh yes. Definitely a warm and very pleasant sounding player, from what I heard at Levi's rave. A very nice choice.

Hello,

I've had a look at the Cary line and the reviews. Thanks for the links. Cary 303/300 seems really interesting is really well gifted (selectable outputs, volume control and so on). But I'll have to go second hand and I really prefer new as I won't be able to test/hear any Cary second hand where I live...

Up to now, considering my budget and requirements, I see the CEC line...

Has someone compared the CEC CD5300 against the CEC TL51XR ? Is there a huge gap between both in terms of sound ? The 5300 is said to sound analog as well and is cheaper than the the TL51XR (and of course cheaper than the new TL53Z). It's also provided with a headphone amp which is a good point, though not mandatory.
So, I was wondering if it was worth the price difference. If the 5300 has 90% of the TL51XR sound, but for 50% of the price, then...........

Hi,
Cayin CDT-17A seems as good choice as well. Can be found at a good price, full balanced, tube based.
The question is: does a tubes replacement (by a model to be defined) would make it sound really warm ? Warmer than a CEC TL51XR (which is also on my shortlist) ?

Thanks !

Hi,

Just to let people know. I'll go for the TL53Z or TL51XR if this latest does not fit my budget. But CEC sounds warm, analog, is full balanced and fits my budget. So...
