Canon 40D
« on: 11 Jan 2008, 12:53 pm »
Hello to the very few Canon users in Eye-Fidelity,
I'm thinking of getting the canon 40D to use until a replacement 5D comes out- (waiting for a  5D replacement with sensor cleaning and 16 MP full frame)

Anybody used the 40D before? if so, What are your thoughts?? It's pretty cheap.....I can get it for $1549 AU

Ivan.

Why not get a 30D before the new 5D replacement come out?? I thought there were quite a number of owners having some hardware problem with the 40D, go to www.dpreview and read all about it..

There're very few people here having 40D here so you are in the wrong forum.

Well, you never know who might be reading, (or what cameras they might own) so it isn't necessarily the wrong forum.  Besides, being an odd duck circle on an audio forum you can ask hybrid questions like "What USB card reader has the best shadow detail?" or "Which built-in video microphone gives the best rear hall ambience?" :P  You can't do that at dpreview!

Not to mention "How can I best use the Sonic Rock to improve my picture quality?"  :D

I have a friend thinking of picking up the 40D, but he hasn't yet, so I haven't had the chance to play with one yet.

Got mine for AU$1,600+ at Harvey Norman, Sydney when it was 1st released.  I 'm in the same position ie: waiting for the next Canon FF release/replacement & then the 40D will be my back-up.

As for the 40D's performance/PQ, it has been great.  There has been some 40D naysayers but I think I have been lucky most of the time if the PQ isn't good, it's me rather than the camera  :D.

FYI & IMO the built-in sensor cleaning isn't always effective.  I have a few spots already on the sensor & I 'm quite careful in handling my equipment for eg: changing lenses in non windy/dusty places.  The spots will appear at higher/highest aperture settings so most of the time for me it's ok & not very visible on the shots taken.

Why do you need a 16MP camera?  What is it going to do, that you need, that a 6 or 10 MP camera will not do?  I suspect its on in the lab that you would see a difference.  And the file sizes that you must deal with - sheesh!

16mp is still too small sometimes- 22mp is about right (68mb file) for advertising work. But for most jobs a 30MB file usually does the job.

If I was using the camera for happy snaps- I would just use a 3MP camera.

Did my first shoot with the 40D the other day....

shot with Canon 40D + Canon 50mm 1.4- raw image conversion: CaptureOne

I find the image quality very contrast-y and similar (if not the same) to the 400D. it doesn't handle highlight detail as well as the 5D.
Shooting at 800 ISO wasn't that bad either. But what did bug me was the CaptureOne wouldn't recognise the 40D when shooting tethered so I have to use the Canon software when shooting tethered from now on (AND I PAID big Bucks for Capture One!!!).

According to their website, tethered shooting with the 40D is supported in Capture One version 4.

Navi, can you elaborate on why you prefer C1 for RAW conversion over the Adobe converter? I've heard it's better, but not in what ways.

ah........

ARrrRRRGH!!!!!

I'm using 3.7.8- I don't want to pay to upgrade to 4.

I don't know what CS3/ light room is like as i'm still using CS2 - it could be better than captureOne I use captureOne for tethered shooting and batching of images . CS2 is too slow to use for batching
I find it laid out easier  (I didn't have to read a manual to learn how to use it) with CaptureOne it's no-brainer to
add metadata
add text/copyright details/logo
Multiple batching (hi-res, Low res and Tiffs in one go)

I need no-brainer software as I have no brains.... Too much alcohol.

Yep, frustrating.  On their forum they said that Canon changed the way tethering works a lot with the newer models, so they had to do some major changes to the software to get it to work.  Thus, it's only in 4 and not 3.x.

My 40D has been sent back to Canon because of a constant 'error 99' I had it for less than 6 months.

After using the 40D for some 48 hours now... I AM IN SHOCK !!!
What an amazing camera!!! What a bleeding unf*** able amazing camera!!!

WOW!!! It also has virtually full remote control and software connection with loads of options and functions by
using a pc to control it. I actually didn't know this when I bought it. I am indeed pleased!
You apparently can program your favourite settings into the "personal setting" buttons and all sort of tweeks. Nice!

I did Consider the Nikon 300... but a Canon 40D isn't bad man!!! Amazing cam!!!
