If your looking for the best upgrade in your system... just try one of these outlets. The place I got mine they stay Out of Stock all the time so it takes a while to get them. www.cryo-parts.com/ouaiderec.html $129.50  Do a google search for...(oyaide R1 forums) lots of great stuff on these outlets there! .......

Here here, I couldn't agree more.  It's uncanny what sort of improvements those things are capable of.

How difficult is it to wire these yourself, if you're someone such as myself who has no experience with wiring and electricity?  Is it as simple as turning off the breaker and replacing it?

yep, but I must admit when I hear people touting how "Big" of a sonic improvement these hundred dollar plus outlets make I don't know weather to laugh or cry . Not trying to start a 'flame war' but I see / hear no proof that such an outlet will perform better that a good $10-12 "hospital grade" outlet purchased from Loews !

The classic was fella who just swapped out one of these into a non-dedicated line and claimed "sonic nirvana' !  Pure BS !!

An outlet is usually no more difficult than that.

Take considerable solace in the fact that even I could and have changed outlets out successfully

To twitch54's point...I went from a stock $0.39 port that came with the house to a Lowe's $9 one with great success.  I then tried a $50 PS Audio port and a $36 Porter Port and found no additional benefit that I could hear.

So, try the $9 one from Lowe's first (IG8300 I think the number is) - you can always use it elsewhere in your home if you want to 'move up'

IMHO, The Chair Guy offers sage advise.
I think you've got to have a very resolving system b4 you part with over $100 for a receptacle.

Well the fact is many of us do have a very resolving system and many of us do hear these subtle improvements but it's like anything else in audio. I personally could hear an improvement in clarity when going from a 60 year old outlet to an Ace Hardware Hospital Grade outlet. I heard even a bigger clarity jump when i went to a PS Powerport. But as my system kept getting more resolution, the Powerport started to show a harsh quality, a "too bright" rsolution so I replaced it with a gold Furtech and an edge was removed. Clarity was still there and so was less listening fatigue.

So I say to all who have tried a more expensive outlet and have felt they've heard an improvement, don't be swayed by those who can not hear these improvements. Trust your ears! :D I do just that.  :thumb:

Cheers,
Robin

Yes, it's that easy.  Just switch off the breaker and match where the wires attached to the original outlet.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be the last guy to tell you that you did/didn't hear an improvement. I was just trying to offer an opinion to help someone from spending money prematurely.

Agreed...  my first AC outlet upgrade was a free cryoed Pass and Seymour (retail less than $20 I think) that I got with a VH Audio order.  It sat in my junk drawer for six months before I got bored on a cold Saturday and tried out the voodoo.  I was physically startled when my system came back on.  Later I tried more expensive gold and copper Furutech outlets.  They sounded different, but I preferred the sound of the cheaper P&S.  Duster over at audioasylum has written extensively about the different tuning properties of the different receptacles he's tested against one another.  The Oyaide R1, however, is a different beast.  Those guys seemed to have stumbled upon something with that incarnation.

I should probably just go and try it, but I'd be willing to bet you can easily tell the difference between your typical 50 cent outlet and a $20 hospital grade outlet with even a jambox, er, iPod dock or whatever.

How many of you would tell your spouse/significant other that you're going to or that you spent $130 on an outlet.  Oh yeah, I know that wouldn't go over very well in my house.   :nono:

Thankfully, when I was building my "Man Cave" (my dedicated room in the house that only I'm allowed to be in - no wife/women, no kids, no pets) I installed 3 dedicated 20amp circuits and terminated them with hospital grade 8300IGI outlets.  I'm very happy with the results.

It is worth noting that the Oyaide R1 AC outlets are 20amp according to cryo-parts website.  I think these are generally for very power hungry applications, like high powered amps.  There are several 15 amp offers as well.

I have these outlets and they are far and away the best I have heard sonically for transparency,
detail, tonal/timbral accuracy and balance and extended frequency spectrum.
For full benefits outfit power cords with the Oyaide plugs/IECs with matching metal plating
(F1/M1 if you can  afford those, or the less pricey P-004/C-004 combination)
The R1 outlets are indeed rated for 20 amps but accept the 15 amp plugs as well -
so with their sonic characteristics why would one go for a sonically inferior "15 amps" outlet ???

Come on now, enough is enough, if that statement dosen't reek of pure audiophile BS I don't know what does !

I would never tell my wife I was spending $130 on an outlet. I'd tell her that the old one had a loose widget and that I got a new one at home depot. Or even better, sneak it into the house and install it when she's not home.

Replacing an outlet is easy. Shut off the breaker that feeds it. Plug something into it to confirm that it is indeed dead. Then swap wires using the rule of Black Gold. Black wire (120vac) goes to the brass screw, white wire (neutral) goes to the nickle plated shinny screw, and ground goes to the green hex slotted screw. If you have an outlet tester, you could check for polarity and do a trip check as well. As far as spending more than a couple of dollars on a quality outlet like a Hubbell or Leviton, save your money. Replace outlet with same amperage rating. The mystics are becoming very popular here at AC and their advice is poor, poorer, poorest.

The fact is many here at AC have very highly resolving systems and very good hearing and have detected zero improvement with the additions of such very expensive, unnecessary products. There are also some of us with less imagination to sway the masses.

Wayner,  if I may, please spend the extra "nickle ninety eight' for the 'Hospital Grade' outlet for it DOES have superior clamping force that lasts and that is something worth paying for. FWIW, I've seen Loews adv Leviton Hospital Grade (orange in color) for less than 10 bucks from time to time.

Ok twitch, you at least offer up a phiysical reason for an acceptable outlet upgrade. I can also understand better contact pressure....all good! Thanks man!
