need windows xp help pls
« on: 6 Jan 2008, 03:36 am »
Seems I have accidentally deleted the Microsoft Office entry on my pc. IOW, when I hit "Start", "All Programs", the listing for Microsoft Office with the subcategories of Word, Excel etc have disappeared. Any way to get that back?

If you have some sort of rollback thing sure, but I prey not because that stuff is garbage.

Now did you just delete the shortcuts?

Go to C:\Program Files\ and look for Microsoft Office, if it is there it is probably still installed. Now to check persay, click on start, do a search, type in word.exe and see if that comes up with anything. If it did then lucky you, still installed. When you find the folder that word.exe winword as it might come up in, right click the found program, and look at the "Location" you will need to know the directory for the next part, feel free to highlight and copy, but you will not need to paste because for some reason windows does not recognize a user typed in "program files".

How to get shortcuts back, two ways, put the disc in and repair the install, or

Right click on the desktop then go to "new" then to "shortcut" and then browse to find it in the folder you found before, it might be under something like C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12 that you found before, then select whatever program you want the shortcut to be. You click next, and can name it whatever you want, maybe just Word instead of Winword, or Microsoft Word, whatever. Then simply drag the new shortcut to start menu button, it will pop up, and just drag and drop where ever you want it, maybe on the taskbar, maybe on the desktop and leave it alone, no moving.

Hi, I disagree.  I'm no expert, but I think the rollback programs do help.

First, if a program is deleted, shouldn't it be simply recoverable from the recycle bin, assuming it hasn't been emptied?

Anyhow, I was just infected by a little worm a couple of days ago.  I used Norton's GoBack to "roll" back to a day before (the last best recover point), I took care of the corrupted file (it was the desktop background screen after bootup).    The rollback routines serve their purposes well sometimes.  Good thing that I had it installed.  Otherwise, I'd have to reformat the hard drive........ reinstall the programs.........

The most likely way for them to have 'disappeared'is you have accidently 'dragged' the original group out of place on the program menu. Browse in nearby sub folders - you may just come across them.

If not, if you can find the .exe file DoS refers to, just click and hold the left button with the mouse pointer on there and drag it to the desk top - that will create a new shortcut automatically, when you have shortcuts for all the apps you have installed, you can then drag them to programs menu in explorer.

Good luck

I guess I just assumed they were not in the recycling bin, or dragged somewhere else. If they are then that makes things easy!

I am not going to go into an argument about rollback in this thread.

Hi Nick,

If you haven't already, you may want to pose your question in The Square Circle.

I realize your question isn't computer+music related, but as per the circle's description, "general computer stuff" is OK, too.

Good luck!  :thumb:

Thanks for all the responses. I think I likely just accidentally deleted it trying to remove extra programs. I found the Microsoft Office folder and dragged it to that location. So now I do have easy access again for  the subfolders of Outlook, Word, Excel etc.

Thanks for the info, Jim, on where to post these types of topics.

 You know, if I wasn't sleeping at the wheel, I'd have noticed that Jim.
I was just happily following this thread not thinking it should be with the nerds.  :icon_twisted: :icon_lol:

I'll move it now, sorry about that.
