Driver workout?
« on: 4 Jan 2008, 04:55 pm »
Since recently becoming an owner of Maxhemps, I've been reading this forum to learn more.
I came across this post from 2006:  http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=32129.0

What caught my interest are the statements made regarding the need to frequently "exercise" the driver.
I'm not sure if this was a blanket statement or just pertinent to Fostex but with the current Hemp drivers, is this still relevant?

Thanks.

Hi jman66

Thanks and I do agree. If the speakers are left unplayed for a good amount of time they would need a little breaking in. Not near as much as when they are new.

This applies to all Single drivers I've worked with.

Thanks,
Louis

I would have to agree.  I have been away for several weeks, and the first SACD I played this morning sounded absolutely terrible, thin and lacking in dynamics. :cuss:

Several CDs later and I am delighted!  That great Omega/RWA sound is back.  :thumb:

I feel that, every now and then, the Hemps need to be played at VERY high volume for periodic conditioning. A case in point. Recently I had some friends over to show off my system. I normally listen at very moderate levels but since my friends wanted to listen at high levels, I really gave the Hemp dipoles a workout playing some electric blues at really high volume. It might be my imagination but the following day I resumed my normal listening habits and I noticed that there was a slight overall improvement in sound quality. :) Perhaps this is akin to yoga in which you stretch beyond your normal limits so that eventually your maximum limit is increased. On the other hand, maybe I never did give the Hemps the really intensive break-in that they require for the very best performance.
