Cornet2 assembly question
« on: 3 Jan 2008, 09:14 pm »
Hello all,
I'm assembling the Cornet2 at the moment, and I have a question about installing the tube sockets...

The directions say to install the tube sockets on the BACK side of the PCB, but...isn't that backwards?  Installing the sockets on the component side means pin 9 of the tube is grounded, 1 and 6 are plate, etc.  But if I install it on the lead (bottom) side of the PCB, that flips everything around so that pin 1 is grounded.  Help me!

thanks in advance.

Here!  Just follow the pic, it should be straight forward.  You should see the same image in your manual.

Note in the manual what it says about the dimple. If you install on the backside with the dimple in the proper location you should be good to go.

I must be mistaken, or possibly I'm overly neurotic.  Here's what I've got:

Sorry the photos aren't such good quality...the camera is new and I haven't figured out how to use it.

This seems backwards to me, but if this is how you've assembled yours and it works, I guess I'll do it this way.

Abe is guiding you correctly.  The tube sockets face upward through the holes you cut in the casework.  The components hang down beneath.

This is actually very helpful, since you can get remove the bottom plate and test the board components without having to disassemble  everything.

The nylon 1 inch risers also face upward.

Abe also mentioned the dimple and directionality of the tube sockets.  It is critical to have these aligned properly.   Again the alignment is from the top of the board not from the component side (underside).

Make sure you get the socket post and the circuit trace nice and hot before applying the solder.  This is one area where you do not want a cold solder joint.  To test to see if it is hot enough just hold the iron to these two areas then touch the solder to the socket tip and if it is hot enough the solder will flow down and fill the hole.

Cheers!
