FS: Cambridge Audio 840c CD Player (**SOLD**)
« on: 3 Jan 2008, 12:40 am »
I couldn't resist Shane's (HomeTheaterDoc's) Oracle transport for Christmas so I'm selling my Cambridge Audio 840c CD player (black).
This is the one that received such high praise from Robert Harley in the Sept 2007 issue of The Absolute Sound.   While I may not agree that it's the best thing under $5k (per Harley), I think it punches way, way out of it's price range.

In addition to it's excellent sonics, it is also extremely versatile.  Two digital inputs provides the ability to also use it as a DAC for, say, a Squeezebox to avoid the SB3's analog outs.   The 840c also has digital outs that offer digitally upsampled output to 24/192 when used as a transport.  It also has both RCA and XLR balanced outputs.

The player is under 4 months old and in perfect shape. MSLP has gone up to $1599.  I'll sell to any AC members for $1150.   Buyer covers shipping and paypal fees.

Thanks for looking!

Hi Mike,

I can certainly attest at how good this cdp sounds.  A friend bought one to my home recently and was interested in how it sounded compared to an audiophile front end.  I have a pioneer pds 507 that has been modded using a g&d clock and digital output board (cost about $600au) and a modwright (level 2) perpetual technologies p3a/p1a combination.  In total its worth about $4000au

I'm not going to go into writing a review but to be honest the cdp sounded as good as highly modded digital frontend.  I could easily live with this cdp.

Regards

Rod

With digital outputs and inputs I'd imagine that the 840c digital output be routed through a DEQ and then back into the 840c.  Can you (anyone) confirm?

Are you asking if the digital out of the 840c could be fed thru the DEQ and then back into the 840c digital input?   If so, then no, I don't think so.   The unit only allows one source at a time so it's either from the digital input or from the CD transport.   There is only one digital out and what comes out is based on the source selected (CD, digital in 1, or digital in 2) which also determines what goes out the analog outs.
