Problems with USB DAC -DIY Server -Dec Issue HELP!
« on: 29 Dec 2007, 08:28 pm »
Very nice article and very timely.  However, I think I am begining to see why they charge so much for pre-built music server.

Basically did the same set up as you, just different pc.  Curious if you've encountered this issue--- Everything works fine using the Fubar II then goes to static--very scary at regular volume.

Also, you mentioned that it took about 90 second for your XP cpu to recognize the usb dac.  Mine never said anything about installing new hardware or can I "find" on the systems panel-did yours, or can you "see" it in the control panel?  My lights on the dac work as you stated.

For trouble shooting, I've checked:
Network connection is excellent. 1 gig of ram. Happens from hard drive or "net music service. Defraging hdd now to see if it helps. Will try and kill any extraneous programs.
Fubar sounds fantastic but when it goes to static-scares the hell out of everyone.

Not using ASIO or an special drivers.
thks for any more ideas/feedback.

Saw some guys on the head-fi.org forum battle with the same beast.  No solution yet.
All the best,
PM

And nothing will kill the party faster than the music server taking a dump....

Since our last email PM, have you tried using software other than Foobar?

Hey Jeff, how goes the loading of your collection onto the Sooloos?

Well, I figure out the problem.  I was trying to use my pc as normal when listening through the fubar, as opposed to using it as a strict music server.  Generally, I am guilty of having far too many applications open as well as multiple browser (15 or more).

If I use my pc in a less free-spirited manner, the DAC has no problems.  I try and monitor the system resources and page file meters to ensure I am not pushing it too hard.  If I do push it to hard it usally give a short static noise and I shut down some unnecessary applications.

Now that I figured out that little nuaince, I am thrillled.  Thanks again for your timely article Mark.  Keep up the good work.

Rgds,
Paul

Paul:
Glad to hear things have worked out.  In the past few days I've been reading posts on various forums, and pc music server success seems best when an pc is used as a dedicated music server.
Enjoy,
Mark
