VMPS "TALLBOY" SUB INFO NEEDED
« on: 27 Dec 2007, 07:26 pm »
I just picked up a VMPS "Tallboy" sub off of Ebay. When was this monster made? It's a really great looking and sounding sub. I was told that it has a special acoustic coating on the inside, it has a black cloth/matt material on the outside, and has the standard woofers.  What upgrades can you guys recommend? Are the Mega-woofers a big improvement? I like the appearance of the two woofers, so I don't want to go with the new 15" single. Was there originally a speaker cover for this sub? The woofers aren't covered now, except with two plastic grills that the previous owner put there to protect them. Anybody got any original literature on this model? When did they stop making this model? I'm new to this forum. This is my first VMPS speaker. Thanks, in advance, for all your help.

We switched to the current "lowboy" style of subwoofer about 6 years ago.  If your tallboy is working well you don't need to do anything.  Upgraded drivers are available: $95 for the 15" active, $52 for the 15" passive. and $115 for the 12" active.  The new PR is required with the upgraded woofers.  Prices plus shipping.

Thanks Brian, I appreciate the personal attention. The "tall boy" moniker was what was used to describe it on Ebay. I don't know if this is the correct name for this model. I like the vertical design. It works perfect to hold a flat screen TV.You guys make a great product. I've used Definitive Technology and Velodyne subs previously and this one blows them away. I highly recommend your products to any potential customers. Thanks, Bob

Hi Bob,

The name "Tall Boy" is not an official name, but sprung from the change to the "re-orientation", which was again "un-officially" refered to as the "Low Boy" version of the LARGER.

The very first speaker I ever purchased from Brian, was a Black Oak "Tall Boy" LARGER, which I still have today.

The grill was a rather bulky "wrap around" divided into three sections that covered the front and sides.  You will see the connections at the rear portions of the left and right sides.

Yes, it's a worthwhile upgrade for the PR's.
