Most disappointing artist/band?
« on: 27 Dec 2007, 04:31 pm »
For me, my most disappointing artist is Lucinda Williams.  I love Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, but I thought World Without Tears was terrible.  Live @ the Fillmore is also just OK, if I listen to one song.  Any more than that, and I want to slit my wrists -- the CD is depressing.  I couldn't bring myself to buy her latest.

My runner up is John Fogerty.  Deja Vu (All Over Again) is OK, but very inconsistent and incredibly short.  I also feel that Revival is the same way -- a few songs are alright, but most are crap.

Anyone else been disappointed in artists/bands?

Two artists that I think I ought to like but then have absolutely detested everything I've heard them sing are:

K.D. Lange and Annie Lennox

slitting my wrists would be too slow a death if those two were playing.
I'd just have to do a steak knife to the jugular.

But then there's the artists that I like a lot that put out drek.  Whether that be from creative burnout, drug burnout,
or just needing some money in their retirement years.

I agree with the mention of John Fogerty, although I've heard his live concerts are good.
Nanci Griffith
Bob Seger
That lead singer from Journey (Steve Perry?) after he went solo.  Oh my gawwwwwdd bad.
Stevie Wonder - just a caricature of himself since about 1985 unfortunately.
Does anyone "get" why Tony Bennett is popular?  Is it just that he's old and everyone is trying to be nice to him?
U2 - Sorry, I just don't understand the draw.

Hey Grover, you should listen to KD Lang's "49th Parallel" CD...it might change your mind. Several Neil Young covers, a heart wrenching version of a Joni Mitchel tune.

Heres a few...

Diana Krall
Patricia Barber
Leonard Cohen
Thelonius Monk
The Bad Plus
...that and pretty much any audiophile approved recording that is (over)used as a test track

Grover, pass me your steak knife when you've finished with it.

Hey Scott F., I hear ya man on Dianna Krall.   Ugh terrible.

But I enjoy looking at photos of her when I'm listening to Trisha Yearwood or Wynonna.

And I checked out K.D. Lange's 49th parallel that another poster recommended.  I'll give it a chance, but man that monotone death drawl is just about too much for me.  Sorry, I know you're a fan, but geeze; and I even like depressing songs.

NEIL YOUNG.
I took my girlfriend, who is a longtime Neil Young fanatic to see him in concert last week. The first set was his band playing behind his wife, who did a full set of totally forgetable country western songs. The second set was the "acoustic part of the program. He staggered out onto the stage visibly drunk, started chugging beer in front of the audience (some of whom were very impressed by this) and then sang five songs. Between each song he would walk around the stage like he was looking for something and then chug on the beer some more to the very enthusiastic applause of some of the audience.
After another intermission, the band came out for the "electric set".  During the first song Neil decided to play a "guitar solo". The solo consisted of him playing one note repeatedly while he strutted around the stage like Van Halen for about ten minutes. Meanwhile, he had some idiot on stage painting a picture of a buffalo while his wife and the other "backup singer" sat with their backs to the audience drinking and watching the paint. Occasionally they would walk over to a mic and "sing" a couple of notes. During the next song he played a solo where he just banged on the guitar with his open palm. This time the solo seemed to last about 15 minutes.  I looked around and noticed that people were starting to walk out. My girlfriend then told me that she wanted to leave. Her first words when we got outside were "I hate Neil Young".
It was the most unprofessional, self indulgant performance I've ever seen.

I think the worst artist ever is Tom Waits.

I think his albums should come with a steak knife.

You can add Wilco to that status, at least for me. I expected more based on their 'near' legendary status and recommendations on the listening now thread. I only have their latest, on which my impression is based.

I like Patricia Barber, however I only have two or three of her albums. Diana Krall reminds me of a cocktail artist you hear at those high class bars. And I did see her live once paired with Cassandra Wilson of all persons, not a good contrast in her(DK) favor at all. Can't remember who opened.

The Bad Plus, I always thought was overated from the very first album.

Before giving up on Wilco, please listen to "Being There".

To me, this is the best album they have put out.

That being said, I do like all of them.  Some I have liked immediately, and some had to grow on me.

It took me a good  while to give Wilco a chance. Started with yhf which I still think is their masterpeice.  It  actually pains me when peple say they don't like Tweedy.  He is like crack.

The Who. They suck, suck suck. I hate their voices and their whole catalog of music. They can go blow sheep.... and lonely bear cubs.
Thank you for listening.

Hi CT,

I am a huge Lucinda fan, on CD and live and I kind've like the Fillmore CD, and I have to disagree with you on World Without Tears.  However, her latest record is absolutely unlistenable, IMO.  Her early blues recordings (can't remember the album name but it was streight blues) was excellent and I have been a huge fan for years.  I hope she recovers because the latest album (can't remember the name or where I left the CD) totally sucks.  I could not listen to any songs all the way through.  Very sad!

Also, I agree with you on Fogerty.  I like his old stuff but the latest album is not my cup of tea.

Cheers,

Jack

PS - I really enjoy the latest Wilco.

Jack, I agree. "West" is a maudlin, sophomoric effort IMO. I've read every review on Metacritic.com of the album and I just have to disagree with the favorable reviews. I find her a mercurial artist who's having to hunt harder for her muse the older she gets, falling back on pat, easy musical/lyrical props more frequently as time passes. I really hope she can find a second creative wind, when she's cookin' good she's one of the worlds best songwriters. I was very lukewarm on "World Without Tears," but as time has passed it has grown on me. I think there are some strong songs in that album as well as some pedestrian ones.

I would say the worst dissapointment ever was Garbage...their name really fit their last couple of releases after the initial promise of their first record.

I would also have to put Mark Knopfler up there...he has had some good solo music, but nothing close to what Dire Straights was...and Kill to Get Crimson was a huge letdown.

Yeah, and those Beatles too.  What a load of off-key drivel.

Edit:  said tongue-in cheek.  Radiohead is my favorite band since The Beatles (one seen live in '65, the other in '06).  Goes to show someone's up is another man's down.   :)

Audioslave
 - Total sell out music, lame lyrics, boring guitar riffs and way too radio friendly.

Due to that utter disapointment I didn't even bother with Velvet Revolver...seemed to me like they were cut from the same washed-up cloth.

It was a toss up Ted between Radiohead and Country Music/Nashville.
