Quad II and Welcome
« on: 18 Dec 2007, 09:31 pm »
Hi I'm Paul from Mount Macedon, Australia.

Seeking some advice on for my dead Quad mono block

I have been listening to transistors for some time and slowly improving the system. Then decided to switch to a very second hand Quad II system.

Unfortunately after a short while the power transformer decided to "cook" its self.

Chasing down the spares is not really working I was wondering if any body knows if there is a "bolt on" alternative to the originals?

At the age these amps are maintaining the "correct" look is not really that important to me.

and no I'm not going back to transistors!

If I've posted to the wrong forum, please let me know.

Paul

Hi Paul, probably the vintage forum would be the best place. I don't have much of an answer, I sold a couple of fixer-upper Quads earlier this year but that's not much use to you :(

There's a replacement sold by Sowter although it's very pricy:

http://homepages.tcp.co.uk/~sowter/acatalog/SOWTER_CLASSIC_AMPS_15.html

However the specs look fairly straightforward, it looks like a Hammond 372HX would work although you would have to check mounting size -

If the power transformer blew though there could be something wrong elsewhere in the amp so I think I would have the whole amp checked.

You probably already have this but I found this list:

Contact my friend Alex Lok: http://theanalogstore.com

He is authorized Quad dealer and repair, been so for decades, knows the amp inside and out. May have some parts, or advice that would be valuable to you.
Good luck.
Rich

EDIT: Sorry Paul I didn't notice either that you are in Australia OR that was your first post. Welcome to AC!!! You're gonna like it!! Lotsa fun.

Thanks for the great advice!!

@ JohnR

When you say http://www.evatco.com.au/hamptprice.htm

and the 372HX do you mean that these transformers are the right spec voltage wise but not dimension?

I'm just suggesting that transformer as a possible candidate, based on the limited information I have. You will need to verify for yourself whether or not it will work, electrically and mechanically... :)
