Biggest mistake I ever made was following someone’s recommendation (who previously gave me great advice that worked out well) and blindly spending thousands on amps and speakers that didn’t cut it for me.  It took thousands more to fix the problem.  That was back in the mid 90’s.  That experience was a lesson in never make changes to the system before auditioning in the home first, unless it is a minimal investment that you are not too concerned about.

I bought a pt P3 dac with modwright mods on a/g said it worked great. Not. When i got it hooked up it was like the balance was off. Sent it to be fixed , some one at modwright put the wrong value resister in the wrong spot. It works fine now. I also bought a modwright 9.0se pre from dan i guess it had a bad tube and it sent pure dc to my 800.00 line conditioner, blew it the fXXX up. Nice pre but it adds a little to the mids and that affects the bass a little bit. I'm now a happy owner of a halo JC2 pre.

Not buying the Magnepan 1.6 sooner. Maybe not a HUGE mistake, but certainly a mistake. Happily though, no current, glaring mistakes in my system.

The other big mistake was listening to something I cannot afford, which would be the Avantgarde Trios and Basshorns. They are so far and away superior in every way to everything I've heard in 25 years with this hobby, that 3 hours spent with these things spoiled me for months.

Selling my Great American Sound equipment back in the 80's. I had a mint Ampzilla, Son of Ampzilla and Thalia preamp but wanted to upgrade to Adcom gear 

I also should have never sold my Acoustic Research AR 302 speakers.

Well a small one $ wise - this audio season (winter  ) I am trying different amps and speakers, working on biamping OB mains. Man, I wish I didn't sell my AVA ss preamp last year. It had 2 pre outs and phono, and worked great, exactly what I need right now...grr . Bought it for $300, sold it for $150  , would've been worth keeping just in case. Wah...

Oh yah, just remembered (because I've tried to forget) didn't buy a quad of early Mullard Blackburn EL84's for a great price when offered to me. That still huhts a wittle bit.

I have to say having a second system is a blast. I also have Vandy 5a's and and I am really happy with my system. But  I wanted to tweek something, so I started a second system. It's so different to start from scratch and I wanted to voice this system differently for other types of music. My systems are on Audiogon under hi5harry. If you have an extra room, I really reccomend it.

I almost forgot. My biggest mistake was I bought an old Mac 275 at an antique store for $320 ( this was a long, long time ago)  and sold it a couple months later for $900. with out even hearing it. Oh well........

My biggest audio mistake may have been buying a bunch of solid state gear to use for a year while I had a roommate after college.  I had a bunch of Dynaco gear shelved in storage, but I didn't trust the roommate to not burn the place down

Oh, and turning down a $20 Dynaco ST70 at a flea market when I was 13.
