certain finder ops slow under Mac OS 10.4.9
« on: 7 Dec 2007, 07:12 am »
Hey guys, could use a little help here. I'm running OS 10.4.9 and certain finder operations are really slow. One good example, if I use Apple Mail and attach a file using the attach button (not drag and drop) I get the beach ball for up to a minute or more while the OS looks for the file.

Machine is dual 2ghz G5 tower w/ 3 gigs RAM, 150gb startup (65gb free space...I know about VM problems), additional internal SATA WD Raptor 150 gb drive (2 partitions), and external 300gb WD firewire drive.

I've run both Apple disk repair and Diskwarrior on all disk. I tried the delete finder plist thing, I read about in some forum elsewhere.

any thoughts?

because it is easy to do and free I'd try running AppleJack http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/AppleJack.shtml
I like it because it corrects file permissions.

from their site:

Quote
AppleJack description
AppleJack is a user friendly troubleshooting assistant for Mac OS X.

With AppleJack you can troubleshoot a computer even if you can't load the GUI, or don't have a startup CD handy. AppleJack runs in Single User Mode and is menu-based for ease of use.

Using AppleJack, you can repair your disk, repair permissions, validate the system's preference files, and get rid of possibly corrupted cache files.

In most cases, these operations can help get your machine back on track. The important thing is you don't need another startup disk with you.

All you need to do is restart in Single User Mode (SUM), by holding down the command and s keys at startup, and then typing applejack, or applejack auto (which will run through all the tasks automatically), or applejack auto restart (which will also restart the computer automatically at the end of the process).

I have nearly the same G5 set up you, I don't have any finder or mail issues.

Good luck.

avta. size of attachment doesn't matter. It can be a few kb and it still hunts forever.

I've repaired permissions using the apple utility, but maybe that freeware thing will be better. Thanks

DrPhoto:
I'd suggest upgrading to 10.4.11. Also, I use a free program called Onyx. You can get it from cnet or Version Tracker sites. I would run the full suite of repair and cache cleaner programs that are included. In Onyx it's called Automation. Hope that helps.
