Folks im attracted by the idea of buying an olive server for use as a transport (for use with an external dac- which i am decding on).  I would like to use the olive without having to log onto my cpu and the web.  This is becasue here in nyc TWC and my internet connection are usually not the utmost in relieablity.

So is there a way to use the olive with an external remote without going through the cpu. I see the large nokia lcd remote on the olive site but it looks very complicated and overkill for having to push play and maybe scroll to find some music.  May be way overpriced as well.  Thanks for answers in advance.

You can pick up the Nokia 770 for about $120.  The only way to go.

HT thanks for the reply.  Can the nokia operate the olive without having to go on the web. In other words can i use the olive when my internet connection goes down, which is a regular occurence here in the "media capital of the world"

Hi kbuzz3,

I believe you can... call Matt at Olive: 1-877-BY-OLIVE   just to confirm, but I believe he told me you can.  I have an extra Nokia 770 if you are interested.

Best regards,

Vinnie

Yes, you can, ie, you don't need an internet connection. I've never connected either of my Olives to the internet and I use a Nokia as the remote for one of them (the Vinnie-modded one). It's a little slow at times, but works wonderfully.
