XLR question
« on: 26 Nov 2007, 05:13 pm »
Is it standard to have male chassis mounts on the source and female on the amplification? Or is it input female and output male?  Whats the deal?

Thanks
Kris

Typically input is male, output female.  Its a safety thing.  The female output ensures you don't get zapped if the output somehow was floating high above ground and you touched the prongs.

I am confused. All of the pics I see of cd players have male out.

Amps have female in.

You are correct. Male is output, female is input. At least that's how it is in all the pro audio gear I own.

Not what I've ever owned or seen.  All my XLR chassis mounts are male at the source end (Modwright Transporter, Preamp outputs, processor outputs) and female at the receiving end (preamp inputs, amp inputs).  IMO, your comment is only true for cables, not the OP's question (chassis mounts, i.e the opposite of cables).

Sorry, I guess I had it backwards...  Must have been thinking of PSU's.

With all due respect, if you already knew the answer why did you ask the question?
