Back when I first saw this I thought, gee, my little laptop speakers do a pretty amazing job at conveying how awesome all those Greek guys' rigs sound.  Or maybe I was just influenced by all the tube close-ups.

No offense, but this video has been distributed around this and other forums at least three times in the past six months alone.  This is just one example from June    http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=42197.0

True enough.  My bad.

Keith, welcome to the Circle.  I didn't at all mean to diss your post.  The video is quite cool, and the first time I saw it I wrote down just about every song in the soundtrack, to hunt down.   It's just that it's been on here before a couple of times and I over reacted rather than see you were not privvy to those earlier threads.

Yes the Greeks are big spenders for nice but I am not sure they are the best system in the world. I saw some of the best looking and high price systems pictures in Istanbul (Turkei) before. Here is one of the best (not very best) system in a best set-up listening huge room in Vietnam.

As I recall pieces were waay overdone compared to the rooms (no treatments, etc.) they were in, but IMO that's pretty typical everywhere.

I thought this, too, as well as that some of the guys somehow managed to convey (unintentionally) that they had absolutely no idea what they were listening to, or for.

Great video, not too long at all.

Give up the investments, the property, a nice car, all to stay in the local cool club.
I can guarantee the pressure to one-up the next guy must be huge.

Treating rooms isn't glamourous. Pulleys and machined aluminum...that's candy!

Wow, audiophile+greek ego=totally insufferable.

I agree that room treatment is extremely important, and as I've mentioned in other posts, I feel that a $2,000 system in a correctly treated room will, IMHO, almost always sound better than a $20,000 system in an untreated room.

I know an Audiophile that claimed that while he "knew" that the room was important, he was always too busy upgrading his system to get around to it. When he finally felt he couldn't go any further, he decided to do the room. This fellow is what is often referred to as "extremely anal" and is as unsparing with himself as he is with others. He quite frankly told me that a couple of hundred dollars worth of Acoustic Fiberglass, area carpets, etc., produced the sound that he had wasted years and tens of thousands of dollars trying to achieve. His advice: do your room first before you spend any money on real equipment.

A couple of members of our club (Pacific Northwest Audio Society) decided to skip room treatment and went for purpose-built listening rooms. Everyone that has been to either, or both, of these rooms has commented on how good the music sounds in them. One common element seems to be that the music is played at lower levels than is normally the case as the noise floor is so much lower and room modes (eigenmodes) are drastically attenuated.

I happen to feel that these are two of "The Best Listening Rooms in the World" and luckily, one of them is just over the hill from me and the other is just a few miles further up the mountains, plus I have a standing invitation to both :^)

Now, before the comments start about "the rich guys," etc., let me say that both are very nice people, modest and very supportive of DIY audio. They have, what is often referred to as, golden ears and both have served as judges at every one of "The Puget Sound! DIY Speaker Contest"  that's been held.

Here's a couple of links. There are also further links within the article's themselves that are worthwhile as well.

No problem at all Ted. I briefly checked to see if it had been posted by some one else but I guess I could have looked a little harder.

Brian,
I don't have any problems with what a person owns, usually it's what they are as a person. If I did, I'd hate you because you have nicer equipment than I do. In a socially just society, you'd have to hand over some of it to me, just to be fair of course! :thumb:

In our socially unjust society, you're allowed to keep what you earned (minus deductions) and not share with the deserving (aka: me).

TerryO

Terry O,

I'm one of those "rich snobs" with a dedicated audio room (well actually the back is my office).  In most cases planning is the key, not cost.  Whille we were building a new house anyway, I made sure there would be room for it and had the important features included.  The extras for the room itself was under $400 USD.  This represents less than 10% of my total planned audio system and is by far the best investment in 30 years of taking audio seriously.

Plus wifey has less space to fill with female nest building crap that she buys, so it actually saves money.

Another financial plus is the savings in room treatments.  I bought six 2ft x 4 ft panels (front corners, front wall first reflection points, side wall first reflection points) and while I hear the difference its quite subtle.  (Using 8 inch single driver speakers in nearfield setup helps too.)

More audiophiles should do this.  Many of us are at a stage of life (age) and afluence that this shouldn't be that hard to do.  It just isn't as "fun" as buying/swaping audio jewelry.

So I'm not writing about fancy/expensive construction, just basic isolation and sizing the space to start with that will get you most of the way to room perfection.  As you mentioned, the drop in background noise, coupled with the convienience of listening when I want is very huge.

Is there a room treatments 101 somewhere out on the web?
