I saw a link to this speaker kit. Looks interesting. Only $369.

I've only looked at this quickly, but this is a really small kit ...

1) The weight is 1.6kg.

2) The driver is only 8.5cm [just over 3"]

3) It's only available in Japan

For the cost, it doesn't look all that useful

Audiocubes is a company that imports Japanese electronics/toys to the US.  It's a popular place for people in the US to buy headphones only sold in Japan.

This is that sake soaked wood cone driver system that JVC came out for their executive minisystem.  This kit doesn't look nearly as good as the real executive kit, though, which sells for around the same price, except you get the speakers finished, and you get the mini system which has a dvd player built in and remote control.  It doesn't sound half bad for the size.  I don't remember the minisystem drivers not being countersunk.  The minisystem is available at good guys and places like that in the US.

From the outright I will have to say that although it looks good, for $369, I am sure you can do a lot better.  I do not remember anyone raving much about those "sake" imbued speaker cones, or else you would have droves of AAers buying the mini systems en masse and simply using the speakers alone.

You're right. A quick search turned it up on Amazon for $464, but people report finding it for around $350.

Oh well. I thought it looked cool. Searching on Froogle turned up a few other wood cone speakers, including some larger kits on eBay.

It is a neat looking speaker and would be fun to have around for a small office system or similar but does seem to be a lot of money. Cabinets appear to be solid Cherry? Without doing a search, are the drivers available separately?

I heard it somewhere along 2 + years ago (Sharper Image, maybe?).  I wasn't impressed.  I think it was barely more than Audiocubes (a reputable outfit - I've bought something from them as have others; they do a lot of neat vinyl stuff from Japan at www.audiocubes2.com) for the whole system as they were charging for the DIY speakers now...and that included a 20 watt digital hybrid all-in-one powering things with CD/DVD player, too.
