I have a single subwoofer in my system, an SVS SB12-Plus:  http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-sb12plus.cfm
I am using it exclusively for music with my 2-channel audio system.
Does it make sense to utilize BOTH the Left and Right outputs from my preamp to the L & R low-level inputs on the subwoofer?
If I utilize only the left channel in a music-only 2 channel configuration, wouldn't I then sometimes potentially only be getting 1/2 the lower frequency bass from my system, depending on how the music is mixed?
If so, doesn't it makes sense to use both the subwoofer's L & R inputs from my preamp's L & R outputs to fully maximize the musical experience?

Some people use a Y connector to connect the two preamp outputs together, but if your subwoofer has a L and R input, then I would think that it would preferable to use two cables from the preamp, as there may be some input isolation/buffering at the subwoofer inputs.

This is the exact way I connect my Velodyne DD-15 to my ARC pre-amp, and with the on board SMS bass mgmt system in the sub the crossover and adj slope integration is is made really simple and effective.

Yes, use both l and r outs (bass may be present in one or the other, or both of course).  By the way, you don't have a 2.1 system, you have a sat/sub system.  The .1 channel is discrete and dedicated (called LFE and not present in 2 channel).  Anyway, I use my Velo SMS-1 the same way SRb describes.  Nice integration into my Paradigm Servo 15.

However using two subs and two SMS-1s would you not run the L and R outs from the preamp to the LFE input of each SMS-1 and then hook the amps to the LFE outs???

That's a completely different question; no need to scratch your head at our responses to the OP.  For true stereo subs, yes you'd need two subs, and to EQ both subs you'd need two SMS-1's. Not what the OP said or has, though  This thread was not about dual subs.  And Velodyne calls the output LFE cuz in home theater that's a well-known output name, and the SMS-1 could EQ .1 LFE channels, if hooked up that way in a home theater setup (5.1 or 7.1, for example).
