IPod Headphone vs. Docking Output
« on: 13 Nov 2007, 05:57 pm »
For a classic iPod driving a high end system, is it preferable to drive the preamp inputs from the docking station outputs vs. the headphone outs? I assume so since their must be an additional headphone opamp/buffer on the variable output that could degrade the sound.

Also, is the docking station audio fixed at 2V like most sources?

TIA

Hi BrassEar,

Correct... for connecting to a preamp (or integrated amp), the best way to go is to tap the line-out signal (constant voltage... does not pass through the headphone stage or the volume control stage) from the dock connector.  I believe the line-out is around 1Vrms.

Ken at ALO Audio (www.aloaudio.com) makes some really excellent iPod dock to RCA plug cables.

Best regards,

Vinnie

Check out head-direct.com

They have some excellent line out docks that are reasonably priced and sound great
