Lorelei's
« on: 9 Nov 2007, 12:00 pm »
Just got me a brand new pair(3 weeks ago) and they are about 50% broken in. I am replacing a pair of Von Schweikert VR4jr's and am not regretting the change. The Lorelei's have a much deeper soundstage and cleaner bass. I would post a pic, but I can't seem to figure out how to do it.
I am driving them with Stratos mono Extreme SE's and I really don't think it could get much better than this in my room. I don't understand why these aren't more popular than they are. There is a pair listed on Audiogon that have been there for 3 weeks at a decent price, I just don't get it. (I do not know the seller)
I was at the RMAF and I didn't see many there that I would prefer over these, none even close to Klaus's price. I'm off the upgrade merry go round, not done  yet, but not going to make changes as often as I was.
Thanks for listening
Jeff

How far away from the back wall do they need to be? I have been thinking of trying out a pair, but they need to be able to work 12-18" from the back wall in my set-up.
Thanks,
Rick

jdodmead...can you explain those outriggers??  reason I sold my Loreleis was the Jr topple effect..

12' should work, but the further out you get, the deeper the soundstage.

The stands/outriggers are Sound Anchor.

I have my front set of Lorelei's 40" from the front wall and 18" from the side walls. I find this distance really expends the soundstage. Being the Loreli's are rear ported, they need room to breath. FWIW, I tripled my Lorelei's definition/clarity/whatever you want to call it  by using Sistrum Platforms 004 under all 4 of my Lorelei's. If you don't have kids/dogs/a clumsy persona,,,  :green: these platforms are worth their weight in gold,,,,, strictly my own opinion. YMMV.   :D

Jeff, the Lorelei's are a great sounding speaker. Nice choice.. I was wondering when you had your VR4 jr's did you put 50lbs of buck shot in the bass modules? That does tighten up the bass. Just wondering.

Enjoy your new speakers

IMO the price is too low to be taken seriously by many 'audiophiles". Also, since they can't be demoed in a dealership they have to be bought "sound unheard"  :P . You also have to wait awhile to get them.

Attending HE 2006 and RMAF 2006 convinced me that I won't be buying speakers for the next decade or so. Two years with the Loreleis and I am quite content.

As far as "tipping" with the Lors, that is their main drawback. I use WBT locking bananas on my speaker cables and when my diminutive girlfriend accidentially brushed up against a Lor it tipped over and one WBT platinium binding post snapped in two! Those posts retail for close to 70 bucks EACH and are a PITA to replace!

I busted a gut on that remark. Gee Jim, I hope you got lucky and didn't ding up the veneer. I've had my 4 Lorelei's sitting on Sistrum Platforms for over 3 years now and I'm been lucky seeing how I have to get around the left Lorelei when i need to get to the back of my rack. I've grabbed a save twice now but my Australian Shepard has yet to even touch one and weplay pretty ruff sometimes. LOL Like Jim says, I've had my Lorelei's for 4 years now and they still take my breath away each and every time I fire them up. It's ashame more folks don't give them a listen.

I switched from the spikes to these speakerstandsonline.com/Lovan-L-JA3BB-966-LV1025.html. Filled them with sand, picked up several 5 pound diver weights (neoprene filled with lead shot) and placed them on the stand and on top of the Lors. Use Herbie's big fat black dots between the Lors and the stands. A bit more stable.

My g/f felt far worse about it then I did. She thought she had "killed" the speaker while I knew it could be fixed. Like the Lors, my g/f is a keeper. She's a massage therapist and can make up for just about anything.....

Well Jim, I'll have to respectfully agree to disagree on this one.  :thumb: I wish you'd have an opportunity to hear what these platforms would do for your Lor's. I also have used Herbies Big Fat Black Dots and they now reside under a marble platform on top of my subwoofer. Coupling speakers just doesn't work for me. To my ears and in my sytem, coupling takes away the focus & clarity that Audiopoints bring to the table,, especially these double coned platforms. But there's no doubt in my mind that your Lorelei's are a hell of a lot more stable than mine.

Thanks for sharing Jim.  :D

The guy's got a warehouse of equipment so he's never w/o no matter how much of his stuff is floating around the country. Me, I don't even have a job at the moment. After 35 years working at that job tho,,, I ain't complaining. I've never had so much time to spend with my Lorelei's. It's a regular love fest!  :D
