Can you tell me how the heck I pronounce "nOrh"? It's always bothered me..is it just "Nor"?

Boy those really stand apart.  The LF extension and crossover point for a two way small speaker is unprecedented.  What kills my interest in them is they are an enclosed system and not an open baffle.

I would think the only thing that should kill your interest in them would be, you know, hearing them and not preferring them...

What kills my interest in them is they are an enclosed system and not an open baffle.  For the same amount of money these can be had which reading comments on another thread were pretty much the standout highlite at RMAF. 

It's a great hobby we share, the beauty of which is that it's almost impossible for anyone to be truly wrong.  Perception really is reality, and what we like is always the right answer.

In that vein, I heard a lot of speakers at this year's RMAF, including the Emerald Physics and a lot of other speakers, open baffle and otherwise.  Personally, I wouldn't trade my 'old' Timepiece 2.1s for any of 'em, straight up, though I will eventually have my pair upgraded to 3.0 status.  My 2.1s are great, but the new all-Mundorf crossovers in the 3.0s is otherworldly.

Despite their conventional 'box speaker' appearance, the openness and free-flowing presentation of Bob's designs is unparalleled in my experience with 'box' speakers.  It's more akin to an electrostatic with great big cojones.  I'm sure this has a lot to do with the waveguide and superb crossover, and surely the rigidity of the enclosure itself plays an important role, but there has to be more to it.  They're just so different, so much better to my ears than any speaker with which I'm familiar.

Anyway, as strongly implied above, to each his or her own.  For me, I'll stick with SP Technology speakers until I hear something better.

I'm in Columbus, too! Just...the one in Ohio, not the one in Mississippi.  I was only kidding about borrowing them.  If my wife saw me auditioning a pair of speakers right now she'd flip.  (She thinks the 1801s are all the speaker I could ever ask for...and to be fair, she's basically right.)

Incidentally though, one good thing about bookshelf speakers is they're very portable & easy to set up.  This would facilitate get-togethers where everyone brings theirs and gets to compare/contrast.

Let me know if you change your mind.  The Air Force left me in this God-forsaken place, but we make relatively frequent trips (2-3 times a year) to my mother-in-law's place in Portsmouth, OH.

It's still a ~2.5 hour drive, but it's a pittance in comparison to the ~12+ hours otherwise required.

The only bookshelf or monitor speakers I have are a pair of re-coned Bud Fried Beta Signatures. I paid $150 for them and yes, they are well worth the money. In fact, they may be the best bargain I have ever stumbled into.

Merlin TSM-M here. Intended to upgrade to MM, but never got around to it. Terrific speaker, but sometimes I think I'd been happier w/ something a little more euphonic (like the Spendor SP2) Part of the problem is I have them in a really crappy sounding room. Even the fabulous Sasson LTD sounded only ok here. That would be my monitor speaker of choice if money were no object.

I have a pair of fostex 126E bookshelfs that I built to the specs in the data sheet.  I use them in my computer room and absolutely love them!  The way they reproduce acoustic guitar and female vocals is wonderful.

Mine too, although they are smaller now, the ones I saw and heard were pretty big to be called a "bookshelf" speaker.  You would need a VERY sturdy shelf to hold them!  Love their tonality and soundstaging!

The pair of Phil Jones designed AAD 2001 monitors that I have are flat out stunning in their performance. I've heard lots of others since owning them & nothing remotely comes close to putting the "bug" in me to swap them out. I'm a happy camper for a long time to come.

If you like the Fried Beta's, you should scout for the C5's.  The original kits were $500/pair, but the labor to build the truncated pyramids was horrendous.  Ah but the sound!  Smooth, detailed, incredible imaging, musical, with deeper bass than a compact 2-way has a right to have. 

BTW the Fried 2-ways I started with were the big grandpa of your Beta's.  They were very nice too, but the C5's were in another league.

I have a pair of BBC LS3/5a with mdified crossovers and also a pair of the V2 www.stirlingbroadcast.net.  Excellent.  The IF designs Tallis stands contribute enormously to the sound. 

I'm saving hard for a pair of Guarneris.

I use a pair of Dynaco A25XLs. They produce "stereo" in any room position and I never get tired of listening to them. At 40 years old, they are as new except for the speaker cloth. For $89 dollars back in the seventies, I wish I had a truckload of these.

It's difficult to find an economic upgrade from them.  You have to go way outside their price bracket.
