Nagging inner voice...!!

Does this happen to you?

Ok, I wasnt happy with my preamp, I rolled the tubes and now I like it. But I have someone who would trade me a Musical Design D140i amp for it,,,,I also have someone interested in my JBL L-96's,,,BUT, as people show an interest in my gear, I start feeling as if I should keep them.

I like having gear that are a little left field'ish...Not that many Berning TF-10's around as well as L-96's that are in mint condition with JBL stands. I like the historical value.

The only thing that has no appeal to me but sounds incredibly good is the Kinergetics Chiro C200 amp...

I just have a feeling that i will regret getting rid of the JBL's and the Berning....whats wrong with me??

Whitese,

I hear ya! What I have been doing for the last few years is deciding on a product I want to try and then waiting for a great deal to come along. I don't buy products that I haven't researched first and I don't pay more that the low end of the prevailing rate for that item.

This way, I can afford to buy the new item without selling the old one first. I can compare them IMS on my terms and make an educated decision on which one to sell (remember, I did my homework first and can re-sell at the same price-hopefully).

I wish I had kept a couple of items that I sold off before I adopted this process. It is slightly more painful financially to own 2 amps, sources, speaker pairs, etc, but I does prevent you from making a mistake an RE-BUYING a product you just sold. I know, I've done just that in the past!!

BTW, if you don't really need the money for the JBLs and you think it would be difficult to ever find another pair in the same condition and for a reasonable price, you should keep them! If you later find a speaker that is MUCH better and decide you will never use the JBLs, then sell them.

My $.02 worth!!!

Enjoy,

TIC

Thanks...I decided to slow down and get more familiar with my own equipment...I will keep the JBL's for awhile longer and see what happens,,,if the itch dissapears, its all good,,otheriwse, there is always something to look at later...

I will though buy a SS preamp to test, so I can make an educated decision regarding the Berning,,,its only 300 bucks shipped for a Audio Alchemy DLC w/ PS3 upgraded power supply...

small steps....

With all the wisdom of hindsight, I'd say you blew it when you got rid of the JBLs. In my view, that was one of their memorable models, not as legendary as the one and only 4312 monitor, but not far behind either.

However, not much use crying over spilled milk, is there?

I am not quite sure whether you already got rid of them - if not, I would chain them to my room, if I were you. Sure, you can change the caps, maybe use better quality wiring inside, and so forth, but I would keep them. They don't make them like that any more - unfortunately.

Since a good priest does what he preaches, let me add there's no way under the sun that anybody would part me with my ancient AR94s, especially not since I had them redone (foam cone surrounds had evaporated, literally, and cones now use natural rubber, x-over completely reowrked with new, high quality parallelled caps, silver wiring inside, etc).

Cheers,

Right! Make sure it stays that way, until you get a pair of 110s. Or better yet, a pair of 4312 monitors - then you can smile and call it a day. You will know why around 80% of recording studios in the world used them for mixing productions circa 1975-1984. And those people are no fools.

To be sure, JBL had even better 'speakers, but they were unmanagably large and heavy, and insanely expensive.

As for the Thorens, I always respected them, despite the fact that I was firmly committed to Dual, which I still own and will never part with it as long as it works and is repairable. Or until I irrepairably break down, whichever comes first.

Much like good wine, some things in audio never lose their magical aura. Time passes, better models come along, but the old ones still remain things many covet.

I believe JBL 90 and 110 are just such models. The 4312 was never too precise, but was THE Original Party Animal - it was bubbling with life and emotion as one would be after 4 glasses of quality wine (which is 2 too many). It had all the emotion a man could be expected to handle, which is why I love it dearly to this day.

Which is why I worte the design brief for my own 1041 the way I did, although the actual development work was done by somebody else. Even the moniker is meant to remind you of 4312. Sort of my own hommage to JBL, a giant among rival companies (while not forgetting Altec, Klipsch, AR, KLH and a handful of others).

Cheers,
DVV

There is a pair of JBL 4312 at www.audioclassics.com for 550 bucks....The L-110's are cheaper.

I would have thought that the 4312 would be voiced neutral, and so timbrally accurate..I look for that more than pinpoint imaging and soundstaging,,,I am convinced that if its all reproduced realistically, the brain will create its own accurate soundstage...

Ya know,,as well as my Chiro C200 amp works,,,I keep having visions of 2 McIntosh MC2100's driving my JBL's....Its like a good ol'Gibson ES175D mated to a Fender Twin Reverb amp.
