Refinish on an older Large Sub
« on: 4 Nov 2007, 07:05 pm »
Hi Guys, first post for me.  I just picked up a used Larger Sub, the one w/ both the 12 and 15.  This is the older large sub that stands a bit under 4 ft high or thereabouts.  Very nice sub and it delivers every bit as much as everyone raves about. I think it's around 10-15 yrs old.

Question:  The top of the speaker has water damage from the previous owner placing a plant on it.  Has anyone every tried to re-veneer one of these?  Has anyone ever just replaced the top w/ a solid piece of furniture grade wood?  If so, how hard was it?  Would it (or could it) damage the sound characteristics? I'm not even sure if the top of this thing is solid wood or veneer to be honest with you.  If it's solid wood then I could just buff it out I suppose. Looks like a walnut finish.

Thanks much for any advice of this.

I would suggest spackling the damaged spot and spraypainting it Krylon Red.  But if you aren't up for the home improvement look, another option would be to find a local stonecutter and cut a slab of granite or limestone the same dimensions as the top (and maybe bottom).

I did this with my REL a few years back and putting a 100 pound rock really stiffens up the bass response.  The slab on the bottom is good if you're on a hardwood or other floor that can vibrate.

The stone idea was what I was going to suggest also.  It adds mass to increase mechanical resitance to the floor, and also reduces cabinet movement to large driver excursion.

Had one client who put his Fish Aquarium on his and claimed his fish prefered "Techno" to Jazz.

I'd say this chap likes "new age" fish...LOL....  I could certainly do a spackle or a heavy stone on the top option but I'm curious if anyone has elected to replace the wood on these older subs at all?  I now know that this is veneer over what looks to be heavy duty particle board.  Easiest option to me appears to be just to re-veneer the top w/ whatever wood species I can find. Probably go w/ the standard dark oak which matches my speakers.

Thanks for the advice folks...much appreciated!!

BTW, is there anywhere you would recommend to try and find another old larger sub?  This thing is unreal...I've already decided that I like the big ol' ..."in your face" vertical design and want to find another one to complement this one.  Seems audiogon has nothing and ebay is rare.  Is there anywhere else to look???

Hi Darren, I have 2 of them, just the same as yours, waterstains and all. They are just sitting here unused.     the problem is shipping would be very expensive, unless you live in the pacific northwest. I still have the original boxes! Let me know if I can help.

Im in Ohio...I wonder what the shipping would be for one of these.  This one I drove to Iowa to pick up (about 8 hours each way).  I suspect you are a bit further removed (G).

Of course....depending on where you are, a nice Pacific northwest holiday might not be a bad option...LOL
