A Bugle fan, but did I just complicate my life?
« on: 1 Nov 2007, 08:41 pm »
Built my Bugle a few weeks ago and have been pleasantly impressed. It's probably one of the best upgrades I've made.

Then I got the idea I wanted more and ordered two new carts - an Ortofon OMP10 for the Technics table downstairs and an Ortofon 2M Blue for the Denon upstairs.

That OMP10 sang with the Bugle!

Today, I spent the better part of the day trying to get the 2M Blue set up on the Denon and no matter what I adjusted it sounded flat out overdriven. I then tried the 2M Blue with the Proton built-in pre-amp and the Yamaha built-in pre-amp. Voila! Magic again.

But the 2M Blue seems to overwhelm the Bugle.

Both carts are 47 ohms, but the 2M Blue output is 5.5 mv, while the OMP10 is 4 mv.

What to do? Suggestions? Can the Bugle be modded for the 2Mb Blue and still be used with the OMP10?

Are you running it on batteries? If so, did you check them?

No, this unit is now running on an AC power supply that is working flawlessly on the Technics install.

I'm really wondering if it's the output voltage of the 2M Blue. It does sound like it's overdriven.

Is yours built for 40dB or 50dB gain?
My Bugle built for 40dB gain works fine with 6.5mV Goldring G1042.  No hint of overdriven.

It's the stock 40dB version.

I just tried a Grado Black in it and it is A-OK.

Hmmmm.

Overdriven in what sense?  Bass, treble?  Clipping?  Theoretically the gain is set just fine.
