How does an outboard TT power supply work?
« on: 1 Nov 2007, 01:09 am »
Am looking at the Heed Orbit for my Rega and am wondering how they work.  How exactly does an outboard power supply interface with a TT?? TIA

My understanding, and I must add that I am no expert, is that some power supplies use the frequenzy of the mains as type of clock as a reference for stabilising the rotational speed of the motor so that it accurately runs at 33/45/78 rpm.

The problem here is that the mains can fluctuate depending on the load, ie how many factories and homes it has to supply power to.  The greatest load is during the day and at meal time when everyone is cooking, watching TV, running the air conditioner and using their computers to browse Audiocircle.

Many people report that their music sounds so much better later at night. This can be put down to a lesser load on the power supply or that they had a really great dinner.

Thanks for the info, but how does an outboard PS like the Orbit or Project Speed Box attach to a TT? How do you hook it up?

Looks like the Orbit 2 is plug n' play. Logically, you would just plug your Rega into the Orbit (the Orbit would be plugged into the wall outlet) and you're good to go.

I'll give an example with my TT set-up (VPI Aries-3, SDS unit).

The SDS unit (synchronous drive system) is actually a 'power regenerator' whereby in bound 120v 60hz is converted to DC , then regenerated into perfect sinewave AC and then supplied to the AC motor on the TT. By being able to vary the freq of the regenerated power one can adj the speed / pitch of the platter to perfection.

Not knowing the exact operation of the ProJect system I can only assume it performs in a similar manner. The objective being absolute stable and consistent power to the TT motor wether it be AC or DC.

It's an 'inline' hookup, between wall outlet and existing AC connection of TT I do believe.

Link,
I have the Rega P5 and at first I didn't opt for the power supply but after A-B'ing them I ordered the Rega power supply from Music Direct. The difference was quite noticable.

If I remember correctly the stock pwr supply is similar to a wall wart and uses a plug that looks like an S-video plug that plugs directly into the rear of the TT. The upgraded power supply replaces the wall wart and also plugs directly into the rear of the TT. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the responses. I think I'm going to take the Orbit PS plunge for my already heavily tweaked P3  :thumb:

That is correct.  At least when using the Project Speed Box MkII that I use with my Pro-Ject 1.2 turntable.  Didn't think that using a speed controller to reduce the variability of the platter speed would make that much difference, but it does.  Much more of everything to the presentation and the added bonus of not having to lift the platter to change the belt position between using 33 and 45 records.

John-I have the Michell Technoweight on the arm, Iron Audio subplatter with ruby bearing, Incognito tonearm rewire and a Herbies mat on mine plus a Thorens Q-Up for arm lifting duties. Am going to either upgrade the platter to an acrylic one or the Funk Achroplat soon. So far the metal subplatter and ruby bearing made the biggest difference as far as sonics go IMO. Cheers.

Hi Link,
Thanks for the reply. I think I'm going to take your advice and go with the upgraded subplatter first but I may just splurge and get the whole shabang but install the upgrades one at a time so I can listen to each piece. Thanks again!

John
