Technics SL7, 10 and 15
« on: 31 Oct 2007, 01:02 pm »
Been well and truly bitten by the vinyl bug.

Got a modified SL1210 in my main system and blissfully happy with it but also looking for a 2nd player to install in another system however, it must be more of a fit and forget player that the 1210.

In view of this, the above players have taken my fancy and i've read that (p mount cartridges aside) they are decent performers, the SL7 being particularly musical all things considered.

I wondered whether anyone had any experience with the Technics linear tracking players, particularly the 3 mentioned above. Any views etc on them generally along with issues would be aprpeciated. In addition, I understand that with some work 'under the hood' and some damping they can be improved yet further. Any views on how best to achieve this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again guys.  :D

I have an SL7, which is IMHO the best construction of the bunch. It is really a set and forget table if adjusted correctly.
The biggest problem is finding a tp4 cart for it. I ended up with a 96 series Shure (the t4p version of the 97).
The biggest problems usually are the correct setting of the end switches, hardened grease on the tonearm motor gear or loosened optic wheel.
There is not much to damp on it, it is surprisingly heavy compared to its size. It is using the Technics anti-resonant material for the bottom. it is very inert to external disturbances. You can play with the damping of the lid, but not much space under the cover.
