VDA-2/VAC-1 vs. dAck! 2.0
« on: 31 Oct 2007, 04:53 am »
I realize this circle probably isn't the most objective when it comes to CIAudio products ...  ... but does anyone here have any experience with the VDA-2/VAC-1 vs. the dAck! 2.0 DACs?

I had a high-rez, high-output version of the Ack dAck! v.2 a couple of years back.  It was well built, but obviously you have to be attentive to the battery constraints.  Typical non-sampling sound (not edgy/bright, but more mellow and easy to listen to for extended periods).  Would very much like someone's head to head comparison.  (I'm planning on getting a VDA-2/VAC-1 sometime.)

JLM, What made you sell your dAck! ?  Too much hassle with the battery?

I use a Dack! 2.0 with high res caps and wanted to let you know that if the battery thing is a huge issue, Chris from Ack! Industries offers an external battery pack for around $200 that will basically eliminate battery concerns by giving you more or less a 24 hour play time.  I considered getting this myself but decided to get a new regular battery instead for space savings.  Also, if you are interested in the Dack 2.0, there is one on sale on Headfi right now for $500, Paypal and shipping included; this is the lowest price for this DAC that I have seen anywhere...

Is Ack! still active as a company?  As far as I can tell, the dAck! 2.0 has been in it's current incarnation for almost 3yrs now and the News section on the website hasn't been updated since 2006.  Maybe there's a dAck! 3.0 waiting in the wings ...  aa

They are most definitely still in business and respond quite promptly to emails in my experience.  I would love for them to come out with a 3.0 design as well...

Sold the dAck! to pay for a modded Squeeze Box.  Had no issues with it (well built, good value, good service, personally no problems with the battery function).  Chris has done this on the side for several years so he's not available 24/7 and builds in batches so you might wait a couple of weeks extra to receive your order.  Frankly I'm a speaker guy, so the differences between sources are easier for me to live with than other audiophiles.  I will say that I've tried switchable (between battery and A/C) sources and amps where I live now, and they made no audible difference.  Others here at Audio Circle have said the same.

OTOH if you have dirty/grungy power I'm sure you could hear the difference instantly, especially with digital sources.  Factor your utility distribution condition/age/customer mix (avoid industry), age/condition of wiring in the home, age of appliances, etc.  My previous house/appliances was very average (50 year old with horribly mangled wiring in a subdivision) but no heavy industry where power conditioning made almost no difference.  My current place has close to ideal A/C.

Well, 2 days now and no response to my email inquiry from Ack!.  Either it got lost, he's out of town or it isn't a priority business anymore.
Anyways I'm very happy with how my VDA-2/VAC-1 combo is breaking in ... very nice!

My guess is the that the Ack dAck! v2.0 would at best be a apples versus oranges comparison to the VDA-2/VAC-1.  But I'd also guess that that your CIA stuff has better definition with newer parts/design.  Build quality would be comparable.

If I owned the VDA-2/VAC-1 the only reason I'd look back at the Ack dAck! v2.0 would be if the A/C was really grungy.

Thanks JLM.  Yeah, I think I'll definitely stick with the VDA-2/VAC-1, it's really starting to warm up and without any apparent loss in detail.  Very smooth.   8)
