Ripper - blown LED
« on: 28 Oct 2007, 09:29 pm »

I built a Ripper a while back and everything was working fine. As I already have a Bugle (power supply, upgraded parts, etc.) I tried the Ripper as a phono stage for the first time today. Worked fine. I disconnected the TT and line out and reinstalled them back to the Bugle. Then I noticed that the power LED on the Ripper was no longer lit. I checked R6/11, and the +/- 10v test points and they're fine, but I'm getting 19.6 volts at the LED. Is this normal, or did I blow Q1 and/or Q2?  I'm pretty sure I didn't power the Ripper down before I disconnected the TT and line out. Jeez, I hate these 'learning opportunites' .

The LED floats between supplies.  It should have about 3V across it (forward voltage on a blue LED).  But if blown or open, then you will get the full 20V of supply (+10V - -10V).  Perhaps it is just a broken solder joint?  Possible the LED went bad.  Although it would be the first one I've seen.

Thanks for getting back so soon. :D Well, mark this one down. Busted LED. Do I get a prize for being the first?   Just my luck (picture black cloud over my head, Murphy dogging my every move).
