Interesting idea, but it seems to me using an ordinary cassette deck with a patch cord to the soundcard is probably just as good, maybe cheaper and more useful in non-PC situations.

Yeah I guess if you really want to do a lot of work with casettes it might make sense. The PC could possibly cue up commands for the deck, eject cassettes when done processing, etc. But who uses cassettes really? Maybe for voice these days. Books on tape, speeches, etc

Actually I got my idea from my father, who is in his early 80's.  He is a devoted fan of "easy listening" music, ie, the stuff that dentists and elevators torture you with. (An aside-family car trips as a kid were torture).  

That stuff isn't around much anymore but he made dozen of cassette tapes of it from the radio.  He then used the system I described to transfer them to CDRs, which he plays on his computer while playing free cell (he's been through the entire free cell cycle 1  1/3 times).
