Why doesn't (or does somebody) make a desk top which consists of a stack and a wireless keyboard with screen. Just like a laptop with out the cpu. I guess the screen/keyboard would have to have a power cord and/or battery. Detachable battery a bonus

The stack could be put under the desk or in another room and the screen/keyboard could be closed or removed from your desk when not needed.

This would make my desk at home much neater looking.
I wouldn't have to have a noisy hot laptop on my lap.
I wouldn't have a screen blocking the sound waves from the hifi.
I could use the computer anywhere in the house.

I fugure you can get a desktop for $500 and a laptop for $600. I only need one screen, cpu, os, ram, etc. so the price should be 1k or less.

Am I the only one that would buy such a devise?

Essentially what you're looking for is a thin client notebook, which exist, but are generally a corporate item and not very common. Here's one example: http://www.neoware.com/products/hardware/thin_client_m100.php

I hear that thin client tablet PCs are becoming more popular in medical environments. No data is stored on them, so if one is lost or stolen, patient records are safe.

Of course, in individual quantities, they aren't any cheaper than a full notebook because they have most of the same parts.

It sounds like you'd really like something even less - just a battery powered wireless screen and keyboard. I have never seen an item like that.

It's funny. I started on a Mac and was afraid to go to a pc. Now I have pc's and am afraid to go to a mac.

Those mini's aren't to mini in price are they.

Yep. I guess it could even turn into a server with other people accessing the computer at the same time.

It all depends on your frame of reference, I suppose, but $599 is a relatively "mini" price to me.

That's direct from the Apple Store... you can probably find it for even less.

Heh, I have used both pc and mac.
Right now, I've got a Vista laptop, but with that Leopard out ...woah
So I thought ... Why don't they make a portable OS...
That is something that will start ANY program, or install ANYTHING, no matter from what original OS.. and run it together...

Now that would be something! Archimedes Gen II or something that would be (yoda'esk...)

You're right. I was configuring the system and it was up to 1400 so I stopped. I guess 600 is a bit much for an apple monitor. Add in 300 and you could have a 42" plasma.
I did read the thread here about the mini in the square circle. Those that use it like it a lot! Quiet and reliable.

I guess there is no market for my idea. The performance of a desk top with ease of a laptop. No fans, no heavy, hot batteries. Hell, you should be able to sell it as an add on for existing computers.

With the advent of non Windows computers like that Zumba or something like that, the Mac Mini seems to be a tad overpriced. Nevertheless, it is almost a full fledged desktop on a case that is more like 4 single CD cases stacked. For what it is, it is incredible. Nevertheless, how I read in an article, Walmart will begin selling their own non Windows comps in a standard tower case, because how the article stated "the consumer who shops in Walmart associates size with power." That line cracked me up.

Imperial, leopard is in but I have heard that still has too many glitches. I thought about getting a family pack upgrade for my MacMini G4, my Powerbook G4 and for my mother's MacMini with Intel chip, but until the stabilize and correct the glitches, forget it.

Wait.

It's great when it's working properly (noticeably faster), but something is definitely amiss. I'm sure it'll be corrected pronto, but I wish I'd not 'upgraded' just yet.

If you set up Vista correctly, you don't notice the small problems it has (They will be rectified in a month or so by microsoft I believe)
My comparably "normal budget" Asus F5R is hyperfast in normal operation.
I'm surprised about this!
My impression of Vista is that it is getting really close ... to being really good stuff!

If one could merge Ubuntu and Vista and Leopard ... into one OS ... Ok, I'd by that for a dollar...
