JD: I'm not sure what "head in a vice feeling" means, but my head was definitely in the clouds listening to these. These were one of my favorites at the show. Maybe Bill was referring to their large size in a rather small room, but still, to me, this sound was clean, linear and ultra detailed with no signs of edginess that such detail often includes. The RM V60, the company's first new model in three years, is composed of two sections. The V, which includes the 6 Neopanel Midrange Drivers and single Tweeter, and the Base which houses 3 - 6.5" megawoofers in an acoustic suspension system. At almost seven feet tall, they look a bit imposing, but the sound is anything but.

Actually JD had walked in, looked around and was ready to leave when I put on Yves Evans "Love For Sale" for someone else. I must have played this track a dozen times over the course of the show. He stopped and looked quite entranced. Afterwards I asked JD if I could play him anything in particular. He said :"You just did." He was very impressed with the sound and appearance of the speakers. He felt we did a good job in setting up such a big speaker in a small room. He ended up saying he was very glad he stopped by. 

It just goes to show that different people hear different things even when listening to the same system. 

I do look forward to his review when StereoMojo get a pair to listen to in their own system.

JD wrote that the speaker height was near 7 feet tall. That is not correct. I would say the base and "V" are around 5' 8" or so.

I believe Captain Humble may have a picture of LonewolfNY42 doing his patented pose on this pair. He should also have a shot of Chris and I on opposite sides of the speaker. I hope they turned out okay. The last time my height was measured in my doctor's office, I was 5' 7 3/4" I am about the same height as the RM 60s.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to make CES this year. It will be very interesting to see how Brian will be able to fit all those speakers and gear into such a such a small space.

It really is too bad that a larger room could not be available for this system.  However, I am sure that cost and availability rule at the CES.  If ever there was a system that deserved one, this is it.  I hope that this is not the case, but I believe that it is not unusual that lesser systems in more spacious rooms often get more praise just for the convenience and less claustrophobic experience.  There are comments in forums from attendees at the RMAF on some rooms which go along those lines.

One saving grace is that B brings along a lot of Room Treatment, which make a LARGE difference over some of the other rooms of that size.

We're all familiar with the problems of small rooms, with early reflections arriving late, resonance modes spaced far apart (and therefore more audible), and a large amount of reflected energy.

OK, we have a 14x19' room.  Imagine seating a string quartet in this space, which will occupy about half the available footage.  How will the live source sound?  Excellent.  Quite powerful in fact.  How do I know?  Because I have heard such a source in such an environment.  Indeed, the power of string instruments becomes particularly apparent in these conditions. What's more, the amount of acoustic energy radiated from four live instruments is about the same as that from the V60/VLA system we will use.

But, and this is a primary consideration, how do we maintain focus and spatiality with so many early reflections?  The answer is absorption.  I take 128 sqft of 3" Sonex and install it behind and beside the speakers.  Four large bass traps (16" and 12" diameters) occupy the corners in the speaker end of the room.  And I have movable Roomtunes to damp out the occasional "rogue wave".  Adding listener bodies in the opposite end of the room also reduces reflections from that direction.

Under these circumstances, as mentioned above, I expect excellent results!

I am going to try this year and hope for the best. 

I have no doubt that the sonics will in fact be outstanding in that smaller space.  However, my concern is more on the visual impact such large speakers will have in such a small space.  I agree that should not matter, but in reality I think is does impact the overall impression.  I remember when HP of the Absolute sound had the Infinity IRS set up in his small room.  He loved them that way, but it bothered me to look at them like that .

HP's room at the time was virtually untreated and a report from someone I know who heard the IRS 5's there says they sounded awful.

I remember your comments on how well the twin VSS subs did in that room last year.  I generally do not listen to music when outside of my sweetspot, but did notice some interesting things since I have had the VLAs as part of my system.  When just using the single loaner VSS sub while awaiting the arrival of the new VLA bass towers, my room exhibited the normal peaks and dips in bass response when moving about.  However, with the VLAs the response around my room is much smoother and more uniform as one moves about outside of my normal seated position.  I am sure that must be an inherent part of their design.  My guess is that this will be a huge benefit for a room at the CES where most visitors will most likely be outside of the ideal listening position.
