Which integrated amplifier is Better?
« on: 20 Oct 2007, 03:37 pm »
Hello

At present I have a Cambridge Audio 640 V2 with a pair of Monitor Audio Silver RS6. Now I have the opportunity to buy very cheap a NAD C370. Is it worth the change?

Thanks in advance,

ThaBas

no - it is not worth the change - you might be happy for the first 2 weeks - but then you will regret your decision - the grass is always greener!!!

Without the luxury of trying both in your system, I think either amplifier will drive your MA RS6 speakers quite satisfactorily. The NAD has greater headroom but might sound a bit dry compared to the Cambridge. BTW, Chip Stern reviewed the NAD C370 quite a while back (2002) and found it a true blue collar champion of a honest day's work for a honest day's wages! Although I have not heard the NAD C370, I am always impressed with how NAD can pack so much for so little money. I remember hearing my friend's NAD 3040 (I think, anyhow, its a classic now) and came away very impressed with it. I have heard the Cambridge gear before, and yes it might sound sweeter than the NAD and is also a very good piece of gear. Your speakers are pretty easy to drive, but NAD's extra headroom might be advantage in giving you more controlled bass.

Either choice will be excellent!

Odds are likely that the move would be more lateral, than anything else.

That said, The NAD C370 integrated has been my favorite affordable NAD piece to date. As stated above, it packs a lot of performance in an affordable package. Blue collar champion, couldn't have put it any better...

I had a "372" about 3 years ago - very simlar to the "370" - had it for about 6 months - it was good - but no differnt in terms of listenability then the cambridge in my opinion -more of the same move than a "better" move

I've had a couple of NADs, a Carver and an Adcom ss amp, they are all different, but none are really much better than the other. I liked the Adcom better than the others, but I had an Adcom preamp, and the Adcom was a higher end model. The NADs aren't very well built compared to other brands like Rotel and Adcom.

If your speakers are >90 db effecient, maybe try a Trends T-amp. You could buy it new for $150 at audiomagus, and lose maybe $25 if you re-sell it.
