I spent a few hours listening to the Eastern Electric MiniMax tube preamp coupled with the new Quicksilver Mono 100 amps with KT-90 output tubes and the Ayre CX-7 CD player.  Well all that I can say is - "shut my mouth, the most magical combination I have heard with the Vandersteen 2ce signature speakers.

This dimunitive little preamp, with stock tubes is fast and very articulate.  With the Quicky mono's something very special occured.  How did it sound with the DNA LA-100 I brought along - exceptional.  The folks at Audio Connection were very impressed with how clean this amp sounded and the bottom end.

The MiniMax and Quicksilver combination provided a greater degree of lushness in the mid-range.  It is also worthwhile noting the Quicksilver mono's run $2610/pair vs. $1410 for the DNA LA-100.

I don't know how Gary Dodd's preamps stack up, but I truste Danny Ritchie's ears.  Boy, sure wish someone would do a comparison of the MiniMax and Gary's reference preamp so I can decide which way to go.

Yeah, I love that MiniMax.  I have an Ayre CX-7 feeding the MiniMax with some REALLY nice tubes courtesy of Bill at Morningstar Audio Imports going into a Carver ZR1600 which is kicking the crap out a pair of Maggie 1.6QRs.  It sounds incredible!  You wouldn't believe how close it is to our Avantgarde DUO system.

The Dodd reference model is the best I have heard.

Many got a feel for it at the VSAC show a few weeks ago and loved it.

Bring or send a MiniMax to the Texas DIY 2003 show next week and there will be many on hand to make such a comparison.

Gary Dodd has been graciously sponsoring the event by supplying electronics and many of his products will be there on hand.
