Philips 963SA ticking?
« on: 9 Sep 2003, 05:16 pm »
I was listening to a friend's 963 last night and noticed a gentle ticking every 2-3 seconds during quiet passages.   :o   It was a mechanical sound and didn't come through in the music, I was just hearing the player directly.

Interestingly, when it was on pause I just heard the (not particularly quiet) transport running--the ticking was only when it when music was being played.

Anyone else run into this?

Thanks!  Dayne

PS  What are good alternatives to the 963, codefree in Europe?

Dayne, the ticking is normal whith this particular transport and there are 2k or more players that also tick with this same transport.

As far as code free and how to get a free upgrade to 1080i upconversion of dvd....check www.avsforum.com   dvd player section.

Hi Greg,

Thanks for the tip!  Seems kind of odd that they designed a transport that ticks loud enough to hear from 10-12 feet away during the quiet passages.

What other popular players use this transport?

Dayne, my 963 only ticks from around 1-2 ft away and only less than a foot after dampining the chasis interior.

It is more of a rapid constant ticking which all  963sa's do.

The 2k Phillips sacd 1000 has the same exact transport as does the Jolida tubed units.

I was just reading on www.audioasylum.com in the sacd section about a new Krell sacd/cd unit with the ticking.
Chances are ,this also uses a Phillips transport.
