TONE Audio issue 12 up! it's our 2 year birthday!!!
« on: 18 Oct 2007, 07:21 am »
Hello all:

Sorry this one's a little late but I hope you will enjoy this issue.

More gear reviews AND more music.  This ones our biggest issue ever,
so it might take 2 or 3 minutes to download.  A great article on Dusty
Springfield by Ben Fong-Torres and reviews on the new Naim CD555
as well as some more reasonably priced digital gear.

The site won't be updated till tomorrow sometime, but you can download
it straight from this link:

As always, thanks for the AC support!!

Well, you have to be a fruit cake to buy a CD player that costs as much
as an entry level BMW...

(however, I now belong to that fruitcake club, so what does that say
about my judgement?)

But you have to give them an A for effort.

Wow, even with DSL it took over 10 minutes to load!

A friend had the Advent 300.  Great pre-amp, good real-world tuner, amp suffered from cost cutting.  But it was designed with pre-out/power-in option to allow an upgrade path.  In fact that friend started out with a system that consisted of the Advent and quality 2-way standmounts (at my recommendation).  At last contact he had over $15k into his system.

It was a wonderful product, a breath of fresh air in a world of bloated eye candy.  Money went where it was most important, it did not follow the space race into huge cabinets like the receivers of its day, it even fit on a bookshelf.  The only downside I could see in it was that it went against the marketing hype of big, glossy boxes with lots of watts, otherwise it could have sold in huge numbers.  I think of it as the spiritual father of another classic piece, the NAD 3020.

Jeff:
Great read as always.  I have to agree with your opinion on Prarie Prince.  His live performance ability is right there with the late Buddy Rich.
