All speakers in my home "clicking"! Help!
« on: 11 Oct 2007, 10:10 pm »
Recently, I noticed a very, very fast clicking noise emitting from my system's speakers (tweaters) which is loud enough to be heard from the listening seat while a source is not playing.

Today, I decided to try to isolate the issue and unplugged everything but the mono amps (always on) but still hear the noise.  I then heard the same clicking noise from an X10 ir command center and thought I found the culprit...nope, it to is picking up the noise.

I went to a computer in another room, and a slimdevice in the upper bathroom, turned up the volume on both without a source playing, same ticking noise from everything.

I unplugged the fridge, microwave, camper, among other items and it wont go away.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mark

Do you or anybody in your family use a blackberry or similar device?  They tend to produce very noticeable interference from some sort of burst transmissions as they constantly update emails, etc.

Thanks Ironlion,

No, we don't.  I have been trying to remember anything that may have changed, or has been purchased within the last few weeks....other than a couple cell phones, nothing.

I even manually disconnected my cable and broadband connection, thinking and hoping I might isolate the problem.  No luck.

Its probably not the cell phones, but have you tried turning them all off?  Might be worth a shot.

I did.  I should also try to give a better description of the sound.  It resembles the noise of a noisy power line transformer.

Does the clicking have a time interval, and if so is it like every second, or what?

The clicks are to fast to count.  My best guess is about 15 per second and is constant, no variation.

I would try the circuit breaker box for starters. I would find which breaker has your system on it and leave that one on. Then I would shut off all of the other breakers to see if the clicking has stopped. A systematic turn-on and check may at least produce a breaker that shuts off the offending noise, making it easier to narrow down the culprit. It could be as stupid as a TV, garage door opener or a phone. That brings up the other question. Is it coming thru the AC wiring, or are you picking up a "broadcast" type of noise?

Thanks Wayner,

If time permits, I'll give your suggestion a try tonight or tomorrow.

Regarding AC or "broadcast" type noise, it is AC noise.

Thanks again,

Mark
