Players with Digital HD Audio Output
« on: 6 Oct 2007, 12:25 pm »
Hi All,

Looking for recommendations of DVD players and material that actually outputs Digital Dolby HD,  DTS etc. I have found that even though the player has HDMI 3.1 many are not outputting HD Digital Audio.

Also any Processors that offer Digital HDMI HD Audio inputs (not analog).

James, I am not aware of std. def. DVD players doing that.  Most of the newer hi-def players I've seen announced recently (Blu-Ray or HD DVD) can either do it or claim to be able to be upgraded.  As far as pre-pros, Integra's DTC-9.8 does it (which just came out) and the NAD T175 I've read is coming out this fall.  I have also read Theta is supposed to be working on one.  Denon's receiver line and Sherwood Newcastle's R-972 rec'r have it.  I'd guess most of the other mass market manufacturers will have announcement for rec'rs by CES.  Yamaha released their last group of rec'rs with HDMI 1.2a several mos. back and took some criticism for it.

James, if you go to sites like:

http://www.blu-ray.org/

you'll find stuff like the below.

“25th July 2007 Denon announce the first Blu-Ray Profile 1.1 players with True-HD and DTS-HD bitstream out.
The all singing all dancing DVD-3800BD and the cut-down transport DVD-2500BT”

Marantz announced a player that sounds (from the description) like it could be a clone of the Denon (which I don't find surprising since they have common ownership).

Hi all, hi James,

All TOSHIBA HD DVD players of 3rd gen and the XA2 will outpout HD codecs (soon) with their HDMI 1.3... See also the upcoming ONKYO and INTEGRA HD DVD players...
As should do the PS3 (for Xmass), the SAMSUNG BD-P1400 (already doing it) and the upcoming dual player BD-UP5000. I believe some SONY player should do this too and the upcoming PIONEER and DENON also.
Some more i don't remember...
Speaking of pre, you've got the new KRELL EVO 707 witch is HD capable, it's little bro, the S-1000 has HDMI input and should be upgraded for Xmass with HD decoding... ANTHEM D2 is already HDMI capable (+ great EQ coming up ) and i believe will give a D3 with HD audio capabilities soon... THETA is about to give one, LEXICON is getting a "5" serie with HDMI in/out... plus the great MC12-HD, but those last two are "only" PCM compatible (better than nothing :) ).

But everybody is waiting for yours...  :green:

James, here's another pre/pro:

http://www.onkyopro.com/model.cfm?m=PR-SC885P&class=Preamplifier&p=i

A Fusion of Rock-Solid Power and Hi-Def Precision
The foundation of the PR-SC885P is its toroidal transformer along with 2 independent audio and video transformers. You’ll also find a blend of onboard technologies to prime your home theater for high-definition playback. You’re looking at the first HDMI equipped OnkyoPro preamp processor to take up to four components with 1080p video and master-quality audio capabilities. All other signals, from 480i on up, can be upscaled to 1080p via HQV Reon-VX. Also, THX, Audyssey and Burr-Brown lend the very best of their expertise to round out this high-quality control center.
Special Features
•   HDMI 1.3a Switching
•   Reon-HQV™ HD video scaling up to 1080p
•   Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD decoding”

Phil A,
The Onkyo Pro 885 and the Integra 9.8 are the same pre/pros.  The front door and some case cosmetics are the only real difference.  I have the 885 on order.

The players supporting the new audio codecs through HDMI are numerous, but confusing.  Some cam support them via bitstream output (i.e you need a pre/pro or receiver to decode), some do the decoding internally (not necessarily all the codecs though) and some do both.  LEading contenders right now are the Samsung BDp-1400 and the Toshiba A35, both accomplishing the dual role of bitstream and internal decoding, then sending through HDMI.

I also like the 885/9.8 feature that accepts DSD across HDMI (like an Oppo 980H) and does decoding, channel trims, bass management, etc at the processor.  A great inexpensive way (street prices of $1500 for processor, $160 for Oppo) to handle multichannel DSD (and PCM).

Ted, thanks for the clarification.  I have the Oppo 980 in the bedroom system and at some point I'd imagine I'll be in the market for a new rec'r as I'm using a 6 yr. old Sony 444ES (along with an Adcom 555).  I also have a Sony 2000 CD/SACD changer (which is much better at SACD - 2-channel or multi-channel vs. the Oppo) in the bedroom along with an old MicroMega DAC.  Probably the next thing I'll be considering is a new projector in the main system after I get a handle from what is available at CES and then deciding what I can spend.  I'm not a huge multi-channel fan (I'd say I like about 15% of what I have and in some of those cases while I like the multi-channel I prefer the 2-channel) and it is of lesser importance in the bedroom system as it feeds multiple other places via a speaker switcher and it is more for background type stuff vs. critical listening.

Yeah, my 2 channel hirez needs are nicely filled by my tube modded Modwright Denon 3910, but its mch outputs are stock currently.  I listen to a lot of multichannel, and to use the Oppo DSD HDMI outs with a DSD-capable pre/pro might be just the thing.

James,

I just got news from LEXICON saying that the MC12-HD is having a great update permitting to get 1080p24, 50 and 60Hz thru it's HDMI in/out (it was limited to 1080i till now).
There might also have an HD audio upgrade soon...

So, this time, i know where i'm going...
I'll probably get this MC12-HDEQ soon...

I use to have a Modwright XA-777ES (Absolute Truth Mod) and and separate DVD-A player and the Sony TA-P9000ES multi-channel pre-amp to switch between the two.  I got rid of it almost two years ago.  With the slow release of hi-rez (and the fact I listen to some but not lots of multi-channel) I figured I'd go to a universal (Marantz DV9600) and then perhaps get some mods done to the universal when it is out of warranty (in about a year from now).
