Convince me to try a Bryston
« on: 5 Oct 2007, 04:11 pm »
Have the Moscode and the Salk HT3's which are 200 wpc hybrid and 84.5 db efficiency respectively.

Doing some research on mono blocks and stereo amps in the SS 'gender'.  Like what I read about the Brystons - reliability, warranty, bass, etc.  Somewhat confused if one amp sounds better than another in mids and highs after reading some independent reviews.

I like the idea of excessive amounts of power and going monoblock but also keep hearing consistent good feedback on the 4BSST unit.

Any comments on sound vs. power comparo's?  Need to drive the Salks easily and appreciate all music types.  Also have Dodd battery pre coming soon and using Raysonic 168 cdp, Poiema!!! cables, VD PC's.

I've owned the 7B SST monoblocks for 5 years. They replaced a Krell integrated amp driving a pair of Meadowlark Kestrel Hot Rod speakers. Preamp was an ARC LS-12 (solid state unit). Though on paper the Krell should have had more than enough power to handle the Kestrels, the sound seemed overly clinical to me. With the 7Bs, the music had a sense of ease and effortlessness.

I have since changed speakers to first Spendor S8e and now M&K S-150 monitors. In both cases, the 7Bs never get stressed and still convey a sense of ease and flow. I'm now using a Bryston BP26 preamp with the 7B and have been using balanced lines from the beginning.

The only other reasonably priced monoblocks that I know of and that I've heard are the Parasound JC-1s. There may be certain speakers, due to impedance, where the JC-1 (it is spec'd down to 2 ohms) would be a better choice, but sonically I could not distinguish between them.

For me, Bryston represents the pinnacle of engineering excellence and from my experience an excellent company to do business with.

I had a 4BSST driving a pair of B&W 803's, switched to a multi-channel amp (Anthem P5) which I preferred (surprised myself with this amp) and then switched to a Musical Fidelity muscle amp.  If you're going to look at a 4BSST I would also audition the 2 channel Anthem also, I found the Anthem had more bass punch and was less harsh in my system than the Bryston.
The Musical Fidelity amp is a good match with my HT3's, I want an amp that drives the speakers and not struggling to keep up and the MF is capable of doing this with ease.  However, Musical Fidelity amps are more Audiogon forum amps than AC amps (too mainstream for AC).  As you know Pete, Jim Salk uses Frank VA amps - have you tried one of these?
Another thought is Nuforce - not my cup of tea but has anyone out there tried Nuforce with HT3's?
Not sure if my ramblings help,  but my message is demo a 4BSST before buying and also try a Bryston with more testosterone.

I started out with a 4BSST and recently switched to the 14BSST. The 4 is an excellent amp however I find the 14 to be a big improvement. I use a Bryston BP26 preamp, a Meridian 808 cdp, and Harbeth M40 speakers with all electronics plugged into a 20 amp Torus power conditioner.
Over 40 plus years in this hobby I have owned Threshold, Krell and Levinson and in my opinion Bryston is more than competitive with these folks and at very reasonable prices. Plus, they are wonderful to deal with and their warranties are tops.
Good luck in your search and happy listening

BRM - When you're out for the RMAF, talk with Chirs/ForrestDweller - he's using 7B-SST monoblocks on his Infinity IRS Betas.  If you haven't met him, it's likely he'll be hanging around with me and or HAL.

BRM,

I am using a Bryston 4B SST to power a pair of VMPS RM40s is a mid-size living room.  The speakers are 4 ohm impedance (3.6 ohm min.) and 90 db/1W/1m.  I've never had the amplifier clip and I can play music plenty loud (90db nominal 100 dB peaks @ 8 feet away from the speakers).  FYI some owners of the 14 B SST have had issues with it overheating into difficult to drive speakers (Thiels 7.2).

My recommendation is to try a 4B SST.  It offers plenty of power and is built like a tank.  Bryston's service and support is legendary.  Before I purchased the amps I asked many questions to James by e-mail and every one was answered is a day even on weekends.  I only wish every company did business like Bryston.

Good luck!!

Funny, before buying an amp there are so many choices, after getting a Bryston you know there can only be one....

What were the improvements you noticed between the 4bsst and the 14bsst?

Do all the amps come with handles in front and if so, can they be removed by the user for the clean look?

Hi,

The amplifiers come in 19 inch faceplates silver or black with handles
or
17 inch faceplates - no handles - silver or black.
