Amy Winehouse . . damn!

There's been a lot of press about this artist and she photogtaphs well if you ask me, but, damn, she's good!  As a songwriter and singer.  She's got a lot of mileage on that voice, it sounds like, and just let's it go real comfortably and natural like.  I guess I understand what the buzz is about.

Agreed.  I think her album is one of the better releases this past year  :thumb:

She reminds me of Janis Joplin...not her voice, but her overall delivery and ummm...lifestyle. Hope she doesn't blow a gasket, and clock out early.
But yeah, she is goooood.

She's good to look at.

IMHO, doesn't hold a candle to a real soul singer like say Betty LaVette.

Check her out:

Check out her 2005 release, I've Got My Own Hell To Raise, which was produced by Joe Henry (1 of my favourite singer/songwriters and producers).

It absolutely rocks!!!!

Yeah, group, I guess I can agree.  She pushes my buttons.  I don't think she fits any genre, really.  I'm gonna check the above site out.  That's a big city recommendation.

Can't say I'm a huge fan of her or her music. I know a few people that really like her stuff, but I really don't care for it, at all. Every time I hear that rehab song with the "...no, no, no..." chorus I feel like drilling a ceramic drill bit through my inner ear.

My favorite female artist right now would have to be Kaki King.

Kaki King aye.  Are you an acoustic guitarist, fingerstyle maybe?  That's about the only people who seem to know who she is.

A couple of her mentors/influences worth checking out, Preston Reed and Don Ross.  Groovemasters with Laurence Juber is a great disc.

Yep. She's out of her element. Contrived, I'd say.

I've got 2 of her albums,  Frank & Back To Black,,, both just stupid good. Sultry jazz vocals along with superior recording blows away yesterdays music. Don't get me wrong, I listen to the old standards alot but when it comes to high quality sound, todays recording methods simply blows away the past.  :thumb:

Save for a few exceptional older recordings, I totally agree that modern days recordings are simply way better than yesteryear's.

Cheers

I do play a little, but most of the time I just listen as it sounds much better. 8)

I love Kaki's stuff. I'm also a huge fan of Leo Kottke, Michael Hedges, Will Ackerman, Phil Keaggy etc. Anything on the acoustic guitar  really stirs my soul.

I have a Kaki King album, Until We Felt Red. I too love acoustic guitar along with most any type of jazz. Speaking of acoustic guitar, have you listened to any Al di Meola albums? I have 10 of his albums, talk about a diverse guitarist that refuses to limit himself to 1 style of music. An incredible talent for sure.

My feelings lay somewhere between Martin's and Josh's I guess. I've only listened to the complete cd twice. I've heard better, heard plenty worse but, I came away from it feeling depressed, angry, mostly depressed I suppose.  She reminds me of Janis Joplin too, not to mention Sandy Denny, Mama Cass, Hendrix, Cobain... ad infinitum.  Sorry   I've been to too many funeral's because of the insanity, too many to find her hip or amusing...  rant off.

Depends on the time frame. My older jazz CDs mastered from the 1950's & 60's sound extremely good -- as good as anything out today. The CDs from the 70's, 80's, and early 90's sound horrible, generally. Newer CD's recorded in the past several years sound great, relatively speaking. Sound quality on CDs has improved tremendously over in recent years, but pop music is still sounds like trash.

Oh I totally agree and i'm always looking for remastered versions of the old standards, it's just not worth it for me to listen to crap recordings, no matter how good the artist. For the most part tho, I'm looking ahead, not back when it comes to todays jazz. I find it hard to compare Amy Winehouse to Mama Cass or Janis,,,, I never heard either one of them scat.

I should clarify that my impressions of her was by seeing her perform on London Live and the Glastonbury Music Festival, that is...on TV...HDTV. I don't have her album...yet.
So I had the whole visionary and audio thing going...she is quite a performer.
