Jim, have you ever thought about designing a CD player kit?

Jim, Jolida sells a very decent sounding tube CD player.  I would love to do a DIY around CD/DVDA/SACD playback.

Ya but there are so many modification houses out there that it is a competitive market. There is computer based audio which Jim already knows with his hot selling HagUSB.  Not everyone has converted to computer based audio but I think thats changing quite quickly.  Besides with the HagUSB, Chime DAC, laptop, a large harddrive and the awesome ripping that Tirade does you're pretty much set. A 320GB harddrive cost me $90 and can hold about 900 CD's. A Squeezebox is just icing on the cake as you have the convenience of wireless built in. In fact, it would be cool if Jim could up with some really tricked out shunt regulated 5V @2A power supply for the SB3. Judging by how many upgraded power supplies are being sold by 3rd party companies, its a win-win deal. I think the era of modified cd players may not exist in a decade.  DIY Cd players are offered by Tentlabs but at much higher costs (at least $2K). And it did get good reviews as well. However, computer based audio seems cheaper, more flexible and can sound really amazing while competing with some top notch cd players and completely running circles around them in the convenience department. You can have your cake and eat it too as long as you have an awesome dac.

Just my $.02.

Best,
Anand.

I am with you on the audio pc. I already have this setup with foobar2000, I am using dbpower amp to rip to FLAC and Album Cover Art Downloader that works great.

I just thought it would be nice to have an audiophile TUBE CD player too. With Jim's knowledge with his dac, hagclock, and hagusb I just thought he could come up with an awesome CDP. Adding SACD and DVDA would probably make it to crazy of an idea with the programing and software that would probably be involved.

Sure, I could do a CD player.  But it might be a dead end (they said the same thing about turntables a few years back).  For now, I think an iMac for $1000 is the way to go.  It makes for a better transport.  The market has momentum right now towards PCs.  I'm going to stick with USB playback for the moment.

However, in years to come, after most folks have converted to hard drive type playback, then it will be time.  Eventually, there will be a new market demand for a quality stand-alone transport.  There will be a group of audio enthusiasts that prefer to have disc in hand.  Just like vinyl.  They will want to play one CD at a time.  The old fashioned way.  They will want a CD player.

Jim are you sure that time isn't already here?
When I read the various forums I feel old fashioned with zero music on my computer.
