Audio engine 5 makes my PC Happy!!
« on: 29 Sep 2007, 01:38 am »
Just picked up some audio engine 5 speakers ( Thanks Phil!)
They are awesome! :thumb: :icon_lol:   Ok a little(maybe a lot) overkill for a PC but they rock!
Still breaking them in but they sound real good, nice tone.
An audiophiles desktop speaker.

I am not a gamer but I imagine they would be awesome for that, a bit of a waste as they sound so good for music.

If you have room on your desk, and you deserve the best,or just must have it, then these guys are for you! I may hang mine on the wall on brackets.

Highly reccommended, I heard the the smaller version as well, very good but not in the same league.

You could literally take these speakers and your Ipod to a party and fill the room with great sound. I think I would use a tube buffer with the ipod for best effect, but that's me!

Congrats, Mike.  Sounds like you got a great pair of speakers.  :thumb:

I *LOVED* the Klipsch 4.1 system I used for years with my PC, but for the life of me I couldn't get 'em to work with my Mac.  Finally I gave up and purchased Logitech's THX certified 5.1 system, but it's been a real disappointment.

Maybe I'll take a look at getting a pair (or two) after my bank account recovers from the truck transmission purchase I'm making next week.  :(

My daughter does exactly this with the pair I bought her to take to college with her.  They are apparently always the first choice when the party goes mobile.  They are a killer solution that offer much better value and performance than most iPod speaker setups.

Tom,
I agree with you. They are somewhat portable, and any person seeking decent sound would be the hit of the party with a pair of these. You should get your daughter a tube buffer for her system.

And Jim, Thanks! They are nice and very overkill for my desk, but sometimes I just turn up the volume and listen a few feet away from my desk for the pure enjoyment.

Also I have not had computer speakers for about three years now so I am just getting back into the internet radio scene. Lots of options out there, and it is cool to listen to your favorite radio station while working or surfing. And these guys make it sound real nice :thumb:

They also make an A2 version which is smaller, and honestly more practical for the desk, they sound really good as well.

My younger (teen at home) daughter has a pair of piano finish Ferrari Red Onix Rocket X-LS's with Trends TA10.1 for her desktop iPod/iTunes/PC setup.  If they just had the built-in electronics package of the Audioengine5's that would be da bomb too.  She loves them.

I actually use a pair of A5's with the TV in my family room with great results (also have a Squeezebox hooked up to it)...unfortunately, it makes my wife question why we need an AV receiver and speakers in our bedroom...

I'm planning on getting the A2's for my girlfriend's desk, as she's pretty space/design conscious.  Anybody heard the A2's and can comment on their sound?

I have a pair hooked up to my computer.  They are clearly a step below the A5's, but still produce good full-bodied sound.  To my taste, they are a bit bass-heavy, but I use my computer's EQ settings to correct for that.  They are front-ported, and you can definitely feel the air being pumped out...if you've got a lot of paper sitting on your desk, be careful!   The fit/finish of the A2 is IMHO much nicer than the A5...my A2's have a beautiful black gloss finish (vs. the plastic-ish finish of the A5).

It's true Phil is an Audioengine dealer, but what he says is very true.
The A2's do sound very good, not up to the A5's but hey they are computer speakers!

And I am not an audioengine dealer, I sell bologna

I wonder how is the Audio Engine 5 compare to some other media speakers like the Blue Sky EXO system?
The smaller satellite speaker fits better for my space.
Any experiences?
Thank you.

Has anyone compared these against self powered Pro Audio Monitors such as Alesis, Mackie or KRK?

If I'm not mistaken, the Audioengine system is not optimal in near field, whereas the Blue Sky EXO and Mediadesk solutions are specifically designed so.

Cheers, bw

I would definitely agree about the nearfield issue, they sound way better a few feet back instead of in your face on the desk, but they still kick ass in nearfield. Haven't heard the other products mentioned but they must kick ass if they were made for nearfield.

Better than that, here's a comparison back and forth between the Audio Engine 5 and a Genelec 1030A, which it could be said the Alesis and Mackie were modeled after (but not the KRK) - you know - a "smiley face" EQ: a bass hump and a high frequency rise:
