Looking for second system options...
« on: 28 Sep 2007, 02:33 pm »
I'm looking for a second system for the bedroom or office to fit in a medium sized room.  I may end up doing a lot of listening there so I would like a decent setup.  I'm looking for mainly affordale speakers and an amp/integrated amp.  Price range for speakers and amp is $1500, so likey to be purchased on the used market for better quality.  Something like the Onix SP3 integrated would be a good option for an integrated.  I would like floorstanding speakers that go at least to 40hz and not be terribly large, high efficiency would be even better.  The system doesn't have to be great but competent and musically involving.  If you have something for sale feel free to Pm me as well.

Thanks

Demarche

I just put together a similar 2nd system. I went with the Jolida 1501RC & a pair of Totem Arros all through A'gon and stayed at your price range. I'm quite happy with this set up. I did change the tubes out from the stock chinese tubes, but didn't use anything terribly exotic.

Not trying to sell anything but do have an option for you to consider. For a small/medium room system, the Jolida 102B or 202A with the Usher S-520 speakers makes some pretty nice music. Even at new prices, you are well withn your budget. At used prices, you wouldn't even come close to your budget.
The Jolida Hybrids, 1701 or 1501, as  Demarche is using are also a good match with the little Ushers and a bit less than the tube units. I would stay away from the little 1301 Hybrid as it doesn't have quite enough drive for these speakers.
 Just another option.

I had your exact requirements, and ended up getting a pair of bob brines ft1600MKii fostex based speakers and Vista Audio's i84 tube integrated amp. They both sounded extremely good. Speakers go down to a solid 40hz.

And in a strange coincidence *gasp*, i've this very setup on sale!

There are literally hundreds of wonderful combinations to select from...  that said, if it were MY cash..  I'd go this route;

Vista Audio i84 integrated   (exceptional affordable tube component that trumps the more go-to boys in the game)
Totem Acoustic Arro    - slim, beautiful, can extend down into the low 40' (lower with room gain)...  with exceptional timbre and imaging.

I hope I am not overstepping any bounds by mentioning this; but the good folks at Totem Acoustic have experimented with this exact combo, and are floored by what it can do. Naturally, I'm inclined to agree :)

Yes, there are far too many good combinations to list. At least the folks here at AC can provide a few combinations that they know from presonal experience work well together.

Check out the Panasonic SA-XR55 that J and R Music (http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=4032234) has for <$170 bucks.

Gives you a lot more money for your speakers.  With the 100w/channel you can open up your speaker search to less sensitive ones as well.

You can do searches for comments and reviews for this and other Panny receivers (SA-XR 25,50)

The SA-XR55 is a 7.1 w/100w per channel receiver, but you have the option of using 4 discrete channels of amplification to bi-amp or bi-wire for stereo only applications.

Seriously,  check out some of the reviews and look at the specs yourself.

Good luck and happy hunting.

I just put together a starter system for a friend:

Redgum RGi35 integrated  +  Vienna Acoustics Bach speakers

I was just floored by this combination, and it came in at $900 used.

Lovely build quality on the Bach.  Great focus, drive, space from the Redgum, and it actually sounds "tubier" than many tube amps I have owned.  I set it up in my main room which is fairly large and it was shockingly big sounding.  Could not believe how spacious and large these little 2 ways could sound.

The synergy is quite apparent upon first listen.  The sound is deep, focused, full,  rich, liquid, lovely and sweet.  If you can live without remote, and with SS, I recommend it highly.

Hey, I'm a hardcore tube guy, and there are not many SS products I can enjoy, but I think this Redgum amp is silly good.......and a steal on AG.  I liked it so much I bought the 120i (bigger brother)  for myself!

And I like the Bachs so much that I would definitely consider going higher in the VA lineup for my main system.
