My son's first system has evolved!
« on: 27 Sep 2007, 12:01 am »
His first source    VINYL!

He is so excited. Marantz reciever and a $ 17.50 turntable.

Now he has to keep his hands off my records! :nono:

We actually went to Phil's house today and he heard his big system and was blown away. He also never saw so much equipment :thumb:

Hey!

Better lock up your records than!

Very nice Mike.... we do need more younger people in the world of hi-fi/hi-end. :D

Now you should find time and go shopping for new/used records together with your son. :D

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

Buddy that's next.
Whenever I find a store that sells old vinyl I bring him there as well. He loves it. He is fascinated by records.
And you are right I have to lock up my records :icon_lol:   really, he has a strong curiosity for the new.
He wants a soldering iron as well.
Chris pm'ed me a link for electronic kits, he was so excited he wants them all, most of all he wants the tube amp kit! Can you believe it he really wants to build a tube amp.
As a father I am excited and hope he continues this interest, it could only lead to good things.
He doesn't like sports so he is going the other direction, he'll end up a geek. But I will try to provide him with as much info and possibilties he desires, who knows where it could lead to.
He loves the Beatles, Elton John and strangely the White Stripes.
The boys are in their room right now listening to a record!

I love it. 8)

Hey!

Mike, you know... looking at it another way... if you are going to really lock up your records than this might hurt feeling.  :?

If his TT is set up right and he is careful (is he?) than it shouldn't be a problem.

But I'm sure that you have some precious LPs albums. So, I guess you might need to really talk to him about this. :D Well, maybe lock up some of your precious LPs wouldn't hurt.

So, the faster you get him some of his own LPs the safer your records will be.  Once he scratched up one of his own record than he will understand how to really take care of records and understand how you feel about yours.

But have fun and enjoy. :D

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

you are right Buddy, he needs his own for several reasons, mostly to protect mine.
Also I wouldn't want that needle of his NEAR any of MY records, God nows what it is doing to those poor grooves.
I may break down and get him a decent used table, an auto type
something cheap, but,  less toy than what he has now.

you going to rmaf?

Congrats, Mike!  You're obviously raising a fine young man!  :thumb:

Given the clearly superior genetics at work (and, of course, the good ear that comes with), I wonder... will anything shy of a pair of TP Minis satisfy?

PS - Lookin' forward to the RMAF; 2 weeks and counting!  :D

Hey Mike. Maybe you could give him that Flora Purim album I gave you at the rave?

Did you like it? It's definitely brasil-psycho-jazz-fusion, is that where you want to take your son't musical education???

Latest development ... a new turntable
we are listening to Mozart , Zappa, and Yes ...all his choices
When you can share this hobby with a willing and truly interested son, it takes on a whole new meaning.
I am truly happy doing this for my son, he loves the equipment and loves the music.
It is so much more fun now!!!!

Awesome Mike....that's how I started too....a cheapie JVC belt drive TT and a Marantz 2216B receiver...ah, the memories  :singing:

I haven't progressed all that much further in the disease...except for the addition of tubes.

That looks to be a larger Marantz than mine...which model is it?  Love that Gyro-Touch tuning knob...  :thumb:

Nice job Mike.. It seems like a really great thing you can share with your son. I like that he can explore and listen to all that great music... I hope my kids have a similar interest when they get a bit older.

What better way to raise your son than with "Shut up N' play yer guitar".

Too cool!

Mike,

Very cool! It took me 6 years to get my first Marantz, a '74 1060.  In response to the shopping for used vinyl, I guess you're aware of this event...  http://www.wfmu.org/recfair/

Gordy,

Wish I could go to that -- sounds like it will be a zoo though :-).  I used to live in Upper Montclair, just over the hill from WFMU, and I haven't been the same since :D.  Can't wait to start streaming it on my SB.

Cool!
My sister has a daughter, she's six now and I've sneaked in the notion of music to her.
She loves to sing and is quite the singer already! I don't know about hifi yet!

But wow! the first system, that is a cool thing!

With the right speakers, the Marantz 2235 with 35 watts per channel (real watts) will be more than enough. It's a better system than I started out with. A soldering iron is a great next step. Maybe he'll want to make his own interconnects!

Have fun

Hey!

Now he is going to ask you to increase his allowance so he could buy more LP and more gears!

But really this is very nice. Reminded me of when I finished assembled my first system... I was 14. I saved every pennies and work odd jobs for my family members for that system. :D

Will he have refreshments in his room for his guests?

Well, maybe a Hawaiian Punch or Kool-Aid?

Mike sadly I won't be able to make it to your Rave in Nov and visit your son room. But I'm pretty sure that his system sound better than my first system. :D

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:
